So I am pretty much ready to buy all the parts I need for my new PC but can now afford a GTX 580 instead of the GTX 570. Whatever I get will be housed in a Fractal Design Define R3 case with extra cooling fans.

    Which one to get though?

My thoughts are either the EVGA GTX 580 :-

Or the MSI Twin FROZR II/OC :-

The FROZR appears to be much quieter and cooler but the EVGA seems to have a better warranty. I am not bothered about the overclock on the FROZR as either card will be more than powerful enough. My main concern is reliability and the noise. I am not a serial upgrader so whatever I get I want to last me a few years and not be too loud as it will be in my main living area.

I am open to any other card suggestions. These two cards just seemed to look ok.

    Thanks all. :thumb:

I purchased the MSI and don't regret it. The fact is that no 580 will be silent like lower end cards can be because they guzzle the watts. My 6870 was near inaudible at full load but my 580 definitely isn't, but I accept that because it has 3 billion transistors and smashes most games.

From the reviews I have read the FROZR seems to be quite a bit quieter than the reference design?

I don't have the reference design so can't comment really. Having a good case for airflow is essential - I dropped my load temps by 20/30C by changing case, and thus the card doesn't make much noise.

Can I ask which case you had before?

I had a Cosmos S. The issue was the only intake was a 200mm side fan, which I had to take out to fit the Fenrir. The MSI dumps the hot air into the case, which will and does result in lower temps and noise providing you have the airflow. So in that case, with poor intake, I got high temps and noise. I changed to a Raven which dramatically changed the situation.

I do like the Cosmos case. especially the pure black one. Was that the same fan layout as the cosmos S?

Yes. One of the established weaknesses of the Cosmos cases is the lack of intake airflow.

Good, I don't think i have ever heard anyone use beastly to describe something bad, sorry about my Londoner slang though :)

I can hit 972 on the core with the air coolers and a slight voltage adjustment and peak temps at 87c

im considering the 570 version of that card, heard very good things about the cooler. Tri slot though so make sure you have room.

you say you have 4 lysaer? how do you fit 4 of them into a case o.0

The Direct CUII is the best card currently available, the binning on them actually seems pretty good.

Don't think the Define R3 has the right airflow for a card that exhausts heat into the case.

I have been looking at alternatives. I like the Fortress FT02 and the Raven but due to their rotated motherboard both cases are too deep for where it is going to live. Any other suggestions? I can spend up to £200 on a case but I like minimalist, and would need it to be reasonably quiet.

I've got the 570 version in my media centre and it is also a great card.

I can fit 3 of them on the ud9 the fourth is currently in Dallas Texas with a gentlemen named Bei fei from xtremesystems who is custom making me the water blocks for them

Sorry, I wasn't clear. The 580 will fit the raven but the Raven won't fit my house. It's a very long case.

Is the EVGA warranty worth choosing it over another brand? It says it has a 10 year warranty.

Odds are you will upgrade within a 3 year period anyways, so I would say no
