    Hey all,

I'm off to Malaysia and Borneo in a couple of weeks for a month and wondering what lenses out of this lot I should take with me.

I'll be mainly in rainforest situations etc so a lot of tree cover.

soo list of what I've got ..

    Canon 70-200 IS L F2.8
    Canon 18-55 Stock (non IS)
Canon 50 MkII F1.8? (not the expensive one)
Tamron 70-300 F/4-5.6 Di LD Macro
    Sigma 55-200 F/4-5.6 DC
Sigma 150 F/2.8 APO Macro DG

Will be taking a 400D and maybe a 350D as backup.

I don't really want to cart ALL the lenses about so what do you all recommend to take? Or if necessary buy before I go (trying to get a Canon 2x extender before I go as well)

Surely this is going to depend on how much weight you really want to lug around, what type of shots you'll be looking for, macro close ups, telephoto shots, landscapes? And If I'm walking around with a backpack with all my stuff or staying in hotels and leaving kit there etc.
My preference would be a wide angle in the 10-20 range, a huge telephoto the longer the better, in my price range this would prob be the sigma 150-500, and a 50 f1.8. Oh and a lightweight but strong tripod.
But I don't really like taking macro shots or portraits, like wide angle views and wouldn't want to carry to much as I'm a lazy ass, so my lens choices probably won't be yours.

The widest, and longest zooms you have, so basically, the 18-55 and the 70-300. Remember, that's the 35mm equivalent of of a 450mm lens longest on your 400D. If you have room left, take the 50mm as well for low light use.

It's a pity you don't have anything wider, but as you haven't, I'd say take those three. Take the least you can get away with. There's nothing worse than your gear becoming a burden when you're travelling.

I agree with Pookeyhead (mostly). I would mount your widest on one body and a tele on another (personally, I would choose the 70-200 but that's a preference) and throw your 50mm in a pocket just in case since it doesn't take up much space.

out of that list as you have no wide angles apart from your 18-55 would be 70-200 & the 50mm.

Get a sigma or canon 10-22 & sell your other lenses when you get back :) to recoop the money :D

I don't recall anyone asking your opinion on his destination :) I've been loads of times, as my wife's family live there, but I felt no need to try and make it sound boring just so I can show off how well travelled I am. It's the OP's first time there, and he's pretty excited about it?

    Stop being such a knob.

heh no worries. It's nice to know others have been - good to get experience etc. I'm off to Sabah in Borneo and taman negara in Malaysia.

    Think I'm set on

    70-200 IS L F2.8
    24-105 IS L F2.8 (new)
    Nifty Fifty
    Sigma 150 F2.8

and if i can get one in time a 2x extender from canon to make the 70-200 a 140-400 F5.6

The Teleconverter is a great idea actually... small, light, and an instant 600mm lens :)

Wow.... that converter fact has a really good point... I've always considered the 70-200 to be a bit on the short side for a tele but considering the converter in it's suddenly a whole new world...
5.6 at 140-400 really isn't that bad... It matches the 70-300 anyways... and is actually longer... Dang... Now I've got the 70-200 2.8 IS atop my wish list... :waah: more money to throw at lenses :D

Back on topic: I hope you've got a good camera bag to carry all that stuff around in. I would only bring that much stuff if I was driving around in a car. Otherwise I'd just stick to a single lens or two.
Why not just bring the 24-105 and a converter? That would give you lots of zoom and minimal stuff to carry around?

Well I guess you've made up your mind anyways :) Have a nice trip and please do share some shots when you return :)

    Cheers!

You offered no lens advice; You offered no opinions on where to visit, or what Malaysia is like... you merely pointed out that you have been there so many times it's now nothing special for you.

    (shrug)

If you wish to follow up with some advice on what lenses to take, I may revise my opinion.

I would say 70-200 IS, 18-55 and 50mm (for low light and portraits if any) as well as that teleconverter. Then you cover all the way from 18-400!
