Linux which linux for laptop?

    hi,

    i have a old laptop with a pentium1 and 32mb ram ..and the ram seams to be the problem. i borrow suse 9.1 off a friend and it wouldnt install as u need 64mb ram :(

    so any (good) linux's i can download and will run/install on my laptop ?

    PS: reason for this is so that i can learn how to use linux :) ltr

    slackware can be pretty compact, but its not a n00b distro, hows about an older copy of summat like mandrake?

    you wont be able to run gui on it anyways and screw mandrake n redhat, they codle u to a degree that it gets insulting, try slackware or solaris (older ver of solaris :rock: like 2.8 will lets u run CDE gui beautifuly)

    Go for damn small linux or similar if you don't have a huge amount of hdd space.

    he might get away with running fluxbox or similar, posibly xfce4...

    Gentoo. You'll learn more about linux installing that than you will with any other distro...

    hi..

    i installed minimal FreeBSD...wot a mistake that was.. it installed but seams too linux'y for me @ this stage... the probably seams to b that i only have 32mb of memory on it so nearly all linux's need 64 and above, i have SuSe 9.1 but that req. 64mb :(

    as for mandrake (sp) again 64 :(

    slackware cant seam to find spec. or a free download

    redhat i've used b4 and liked, but cant seam to find a free download or spec. for it

    gentoo neva heard off will go searchin now :)

    The thing with gentoo is that its quite advanced, but you can tailor it to your needs. The install guide is also incredibly useful- and you'll learn a lot just by installing it!

    One word: Debian.

    It can be a bit of a slog getting it installed but it will work with your hardware. I am running Debian on an IBM TP 770 (P1 233 w/MMX, 128MB RAM). You may have some difficulties getting a window manager going (don't even look at KDE). I run fluxbox on my lappy quite happily. Very nice it is too!
