hi, i have a old laptop with a pentium1 and 32mb ram ..and the ram seams to be the problem. i borrow suse 9.1 off a friend and it wouldnt install as u need 64mb ram so any (good) linux's i can download and will run/install on my laptop ? thankz PS: reason for this is so that i can learn how to use linux ltr
slackware can be pretty compact, but its not a n00b distro, hows about an older copy of summat like mandrake?
you wont be able to run gui on it anyways and screw mandrake n redhat, they codle u to a degree that it gets insulting, try slackware or solaris (older ver of solaris like 2.8 will lets u run CDE gui beautifuly)
Gentoo. You'll learn more about linux installing that than you will with any other distro... Cheers Sam
hi.. i installed minimal FreeBSD...wot a mistake that was.. it installed but seams too linux'y for me @ this stage... the probably seams to b that i only have 32mb of memory on it so nearly all linux's need 64 and above, i have SuSe 9.1 but that req. 64mb as for mandrake (sp) again 64 slackware cant seam to find spec. or a free download redhat i've used b4 and liked, but cant seam to find a free download or spec. for it gentoo neva heard off will go searchin now lata thx @ll
The thing with gentoo is that its quite advanced, but you can tailor it to your needs. The install guide is also incredibly useful- and you'll learn a lot just by installing it! Cheers Sam
One word: Debian. It can be a bit of a slog getting it installed but it will work with your hardware. I am running Debian on an IBM TP 770 (P1 233 w/MMX, 128MB RAM). You may have some difficulties getting a window manager going (don't even look at KDE). I run fluxbox on my lappy quite happily. Very nice it is too! Good luck!
