I've got my heart set on a mechanical keyboard after trying one the other day and it feeling amazing to type on.

But which one to go for? Preferable either red, or RGB back-lit but that isn't essential if there is a non-back-lit keyboard that is miles ahead of the rest then I don't mind dropping the lights.

Thanks in advance for any help.

First piece of advice: don't buy a Razer keyboard, despite their market presence.

Second piece of advice: set a budget and that will help inform your choice. For example, RGB mech keyboards (the ones worth having) start at about £120, whereas without the fancy backlighting they would probably cost £60-70.

Also related to budget is the consideration of size - do you want a full size keyboard, or something smaller? I've had most of the mainstream formats and I'm currently using tenkeyless (TKL = no numpad) which is fantastic, but I do like the compactness of my V60 Mini.

Lastly, consider the type of switch you might prefer to type on. The most popular switch types are as follows (Cherry MX):

Blue - tactile feedback with click (loudest)
Brown - tactile feedback with no audible click
Red - linear action (light)
Black - linear action (heavy)

My current board has reds and I'll be honest...I don't like them much for typing, but for gaming they simply can't be beaten.

Cheers for the reply LR. I've been trying my best to make it through this thread but 2 days later and a good few thousand posts later, it's just opened cans of worms with more cans inside :s

I've been looking at this Corsair Staffe but that's just purely because of the pretty lights and customization of lighting. Reading that other thread I have come to learn that the bottom row are problematic when it comes to getting new keys. However I don't feel that I will be changing any keys due to lazyness, and that's what the RGB is for ;)

Also reading that thread it seems a lot of people love the Filco boards, but it's a lot of money for a board that looks like a standard HP one (I know you're paying for the switches, but still)

As for which switches, I suppose I'll not know which ones I want until I try some so my first board is always going to be a gamble

I find reds are great for gaming, but I often bottom out the keys while typing as I can't tell when they have been pressed enough. Browns would probably have been better. That said, I do love my Cooler Master Quickfire TK.

Thanks for your reply Fizzban. I like the look of that coolermaster, especially as it's compact, but still got a numpad, and only £73 on Amazon.

Only problem is I'd prefer the Red backlight LED, however I can't seem to find a red LED with brown switches, they all seem to be Red LED/Red Switch and White or Blue LED/Brown Switch :s. That Said I don't do a lot of typing at home so I might be OK with Red Switches

Any chance you could post a picture of it in the dark with the LEDs on full brightness just so I can see what it's like, I appreciate it's difficult to get an accurate representation of the LED from a picture.

I'm in the same boat.

I picked up a keyboard tester which allowed me to confirm that I definitely want browns after having the tester on my desk for the past week and pressing the keys over and over.

It also had the added bonus of really annoying everyone in the office as I repeatedly clicked on the blue and green keys.

Yeah you wont be able to get brown switches with red backlight. It is just how they did it. I went with red too and I don't regret it despite what I said in my last post.

I can tell you that I don't use full brightness as it is very bright on full, especially as the metal backplate is red. It is most pleasing to see. I will see what I can do with regards to a picture.

I meant with the Cooler Master Quickfire, not keyboards in general. :p

Picture is rubbish phone job and doesn't do the brightness justice, but here it is.

Sorry for the late reply, only just seen your posts. Thanks for your help guys really appreciate it.

Like the look of that Qpad Mr_Mistoffelees thanks, although I think I'm being drawn toward an RGB setup, purely for the pretty colours.

Can't get the quickfire with brown keys & red LED but can get a varying degree of RGB/Red LED lit boards with brown keys below, out of this selection, which would you go for?

K70 Gen3 Browns - Red LED
K70 Gen1 Browns - Red LED
K70 Gen2 Browns - RGB LED
K95 Gen2 Browns - RGB LED
K95 Gen3 Browns - RGB LED

All are on this link

Or there's the straffe on browns with either red LED or RGB here

All that said, these corsair boards are pretty pricey, and considering this is for my home PC which I don't really type a lot on, I suppose I'd be ok with the MX Reds on the quikfire mentioned above right, which is a lot cheaper? Too many options!

Thanks in advance

Edit: Just been having a proper look at that QPad, and like the fact it has USB and headphone built in, as I don't sit anywhere near my PC so this will be handy for memory sticks etc. is there much lag on the usb, as in if I plug my mouse into the keyboard will it be OK or would you still advise to plug mouse directly into machine (logistically it would be easier for me to have it plugged into the keyboard if possible)
