i am stuck between to hard rocks at the moment,

which in terms of speed is better a X1950XT-X or a 8800GTS 320Mb edition

TBH i dont care about DX10 as i wont be buying or playing any new games for a long time yet.

£200 mark is my budget on a card.

ATI R600 cards are out of question.

Whether you'll buy Vista/DirectX 10 capable games or not, it makes sense to buy a card which uses newer technology, if the price is about the same as the older card

I'd say the XTX because I think it performs better?!

Depends on the resolution, like DougEdgy said, if you don't need higher then 1280x1024 then the 8800 is a better choice, higher resolutions then that and the X1950XTX will have better results.

well my res is 1280x1024, and i always thought the 8800 would be faster, but alot of sites are saying the x1950xtx is better.

TBH a XFX or EVGA 8800GTS 320Mb will be much better than my muppet of a 7600GS!!!

I would go for the X1900XT-X, because it performs better, and since you don't care about the DX10 support.

i'd definately go for the 8800GTS TBH. i think it'd be more sensible to go for a newer card since it doesn't make that big a difference imo

Hmm this is a tough one. With the release of Stalker it seams that the 320mb on the new GTS's is inadequate. Stalker uses up a huge amount of video ram (over 400mb with maximum textures) so the 512mb xtx is the better card. Meaning that future games will require more video memory that the current crop of 256mb wont handle.

I think buying a 320mb 8800gts is false ecomony because of the small amout of memory. I just wish the 640mb cards would come down a little more!

So my verdict is don't buy either. Save a little more for a 8800gts 640mb. It will last you alot longer.

wait until the 2900 comes out and buy 2 of those. thats what i plan to do anyways :p

    amd x2 6000
    2gb 6400 ram 4,4,4,15
    2x x1950xtx vidcards
    asus mobo

does the trick for me. see the 3dmark 2006 thread for my results.

that said i think i would want a dx10 card when it came out (oh i forgot ime getting two)

although a single x1950xtx will score about 6k 3d marks

8800GTS. But can't you rise the budget and get the 640MB? In higher res, the 320MB sometimes gets out performed by the ATi card.
