half life doesn't really have a story ... you just progress through a world that gets more and more in ****. Not much is explained tbh
Grim Fandango and The Curse of Monkey Island. Escape from Monkey Island was pretty good too, I loved the whole 'commercialization of the Caribbean' theme. On a partial side note, PLEASE give us a new Grim Fandango! The universe is too good to be left unexplored. *cough* Telltale *cough*
The universe in general, not the first half life specifically (which I did not finish tbh. but i did finish the others) edit: you know what, I forgot there were two expensions to the first, which makes it 3 out of 6 games that I haven't played. My point is not valid. Never mind
I could agree with you for the first one all it had was an excuse plot to drive the action with the slight twist/sequel hook at the ending. Half-Life 2 and onwards though it definitely has a good plot though they've got a task ahead of themselves to finish it satisfactorally
You guys must have pretty cool PCs. One of them is so cool it doesn't even need subtitles! Or even the full main title for that matter! I don't mean to be "that guy" ripping on someone with two posts but to be fair there are many games in the Legend of Zelda series with unique story lines and none on the PC. I see your witty mine based response and raise you Minecraft.
Yup. add to that half life. (although in all fairness, it's more the amazing fictional universe it is set in, than the story itself) Mass effect 1 + 2, if you count them, as they kind of came out on xbox first. Anarchy Online has an amazing storyline and universe (even has a book written about it)
I just bought the first Half Life again and will play finish it this time. I forgot I had a legit disc and cd key though... I could have activated this one. Oh well
Actually, I think you'll find Minesweeper's story is pretty damn epic: Oh, my selection: Half-Life 1 Mass Effect series Wing Commander: Prophecy Modern Warfare 2 (JOKING, JOKING! Jeez )
Psychonauts is pretty good. I like the idea of the Stalker series of games, though the problem (or bonus) was that if you didn't do all the endings and didn't listen to what was going on you missed out the fact that there was any story at all.
In no particular order: FF7 (lots of Little Stories combined into the overall arc of the main epic plot) Deus Ex (on my first playthrough I had to stop playing and sit back every now and then just to get my head round what was going on) Planescape Torment (I can't believe no one has mentioned this, The story is so epicly well written that it makes you think on so many levels) Grim Fandango
Have to agree with Deders, looking back at older games, for me it's definitely Planescape Torment. If you've never played it, do yourself a favour and grab it from Good Old Games for $9.99. I appreciate it's old now, but it's worth trying to look past the dated graphics as it's a damn fine story. They also have an article (available here) on how to enhance the graphics for modern high resolution widescreen displays which is worth doing. There are many other isometric RPG's from the 90's and early 00's which are also deserving of mention, such as the Fallout series (1 and 2) or Baldur's Gate, you can't go wrong with any of those in terms of a cracking story. A close second place, something a bit more modern which even the youngest forum members should have played! The fantastic Fallout 3. I'm playing though Fallout: New Vegas at the moment and loving every moment, but I'm not entirely sure yet that the story is pulling me in as much as Fallout 3. Other games that come to mind are Deus Ex and Half Life 2 (inc. Episodes 1 and 2).
