I want to perform remote access work on another PC to help my parents in another state. Hopefully it's free and secure as well. Reason being, the local PC company "fixed" malware issue by backing up infected system, formatting and restoring OS and then placing all INFECTED files in backup folder so they could get to their old files. They never treated the original files! Anyway, they have had this done twice in one week and have paid over $300. I would love to remotely work on the PC vs talking them through with "Click this... now do this..." and I'm not letting them bring it back to that shop.

    Thanks!

I use team viewer personally. At work we use log me in.
Teamviewer is great as they go to the site download the app give you the code and the Epwin and away you go. I use it for bro and folks all the time.

Checked out Team Viewer and it looks awesome. Great reviews from CNET and other sites. I'm definitely going to try it out.

I doubt you'll regret it. And its free which is a bonus. Also means you can do adhoc support for anyone else as the client is run once or install

Yes, I use TeamViewer too. It has a lot of features and I couldn't find any delays in the transmission. I've solved hundreds of problems using TeamViewer in a few minutes instead of putting a phone to my hears for hours.

Wow!!! I wasn't able to work on my parents PC last night, but I delivered a laptop to a neighbor that I had rebuilt for him. He wanted to transfer about 6GB of data from his desktop to the laptop so I can rebuild the desktop. I couldn't believe how quick and easy TeamViewer was to use!!! Literally a couple of clicks on each computer and VOILA!!! Thanks again for the info. I KNEW I'd find what I needed from the good people on bit-tech!

Out of interest, what's wrong with Windows' built-in remote desktop connection? I've personally not had any experience using either as I haven't needed to before, but I thought it was supposed to work fine for this sort of thing?

RDP over the internet to a remote machine can be painful.

Teamviewer or logmein work better (and no ports to open on firewalls).

Both also have iphone apps for mobile access

You need to be running Win 7 professional and above in order to enable Remore desktop connection on the client.

Logmein and Teamspeaker are about even. With the new Teamviewer 6, you can even enable "turn on before windows login"

I'd recommend VNC or Microsoft Remote Deskto. A big advantage of those is that knowing them can be useful for a career in IT.

You can use various remote support services such as gosupportnow.com, logmeinrescue.com etc. in order to remotely access your parents computer.
