Ok.. I seem to be getting two sets of figures, depending on which program I use to monitor temps.

Which one do I believe? Why is this happening? Should I believe the set of temps that most closely resemble my BIOS reading? How can I be sure the BIOS is correct?

I have no means of monitoring temps with external equipment.

It all depends on what the tjmax temp the program you use has for your CPU, it looks like realtemp has it set to 90, whilst hwmonitor is set to 100, hense the 10 degree offset, try to find out what the real tjmax is and you'll know which tool to use!

So the values I get depend on what TJMax is set? That's mental... How can I ever trust that? When I take my own body temperature, I don't need to set the thermometer to what my body's max temperature is :)

    Bonkers...

So I'll never actually know then... great.

I can't find any definitive info on TJmax either... some say 90, some say 100... some say you have to read some hex value from a temp target register as each individual chip has a unique value... Jesus...

I just want to know how hot the damned thing is!

    I give up.

    Tjmax is 100 for Nehalem.

Yeah.. just worked that out, and set at 100 they tally with my BIOS readings, which are 42 degrees at idle.. which means i'm reaching 80 degrees or more at stock speeds under stress.

How can Intel supply chips with such crap coolers? It's outrageous.. 80 degrees!

Even with the case covers off it only drops 3 degrees, so it's not as if this case is usless either.

Incidentally, that means Speedfan is reading incorrectly... just for the benefit of others.

That's marketing for you. Have you got an idea of your next CPU cooler yet?

Still mulling it over.... well.. whether air or water anyway.

If Air... then TRUE with Noctua fans... no brainer really.

If Water, then probably going with DD blocks like last time... no idea on anything else yet, as I'm not sure about the viability of 1/2 stuff in this rig... or even if a single 120 rad set up will be better than a decent air cooler/fan.
