Memory Which would you choose?

For the same money, which would you choose:

    16GB (8GBx2) 1600MHz DDR3

    or

    8GB (4GBx2) 2400MHz DDR3

I'm just curious whether more people prefer outright OC potential or huge capacity. I suspect the former for people here, but would a more capable 3rd Gen 22nm Intel CPU tempt you to OC memory more? It's a significant frequency increase.

I'd go for the 8gb 2400mhz it's all about speed for me

the 2400mhz for sure. but i already have 16gb of 2200mhz, so, ideally id want 16b of that too :p

I have 16 GB 1600 RAM and have yet to see even 8GB used, so I would go with high speed ram.

2400 mhz definitely, half tempted to try overclocking the memory in my next build for fun, though the performance gains would probably be minimal...

A very interesting question! Unless you do video encoding or similar tasks, there's not much need for over 8gb. I'm not sure if this is how it would work in the real world, but if you calculate 'RAM Potential' or RP by multiplying the capacity by speed, you get 19200RP for 8gig of 2400 and 25600RP for 16gig of 1600. Then if you factor in that higher frequencies will mean higher latency, there will be a further advantage of having more capacity at lower speed, although the affect of latency is only very small.

The 8GB if I had the space. But honestly, the 1600 would be more efficient.

    So 1600 it is!

Any hints on whether the conclusions of this article will still apply to Ivy Bridge?:eyebrow:

As for the question, I'd definitely go for 16GB.

For me it would have to be 8GB @ 2400MHZ- my memory usage almost never exceeds 4GB let alone 8GB.

Dont suppose you have any spare ASUS Maximus V GENE Z77 mobos going to waste Bindibadgi?
That board looks the part as does it supported memory frequencies.
Never did get to change my p67pro rev2. This board may just be what im after.
Whats the deal with ddr3 anyway? Are manufacturers just increasing mhz at the expense of timings?

16 GB every time, any time. I really don't give a damn about my ram timings/clock speed.

The 16GB, although it's a downgrade either way for me. I lose speed with the 16GB 1600MHz from my 1866MHz kit and halve the capacity with the 8GB 2400MHz.

Can I just have the 2400MHz for Geekbench runs?

16GB for me as CS Suite chomps it.

It ALL depends on the ICs. The latest ones can do super high frequency but it has to be quite high latency CL10/11. The retail channel almost sells entirely by frequency anyway - few are educated enough to understand timings.

Our ROG boards have IC profiles built in, so if you buy memory with Samsung ICs you just click the
profile and you get the optimum timings that work on our board.

16GB 1600MHz is what I would go for. Then you can set up a RAM disk. :)

I would do the 16GB too. I've never seen a convincing argument for high speed RAM in games, and I like to play with the odd VM here and there.
