I am in a quandry, I have been using my trusty Nokia 6210 for a couple of years now (I'm still on the original handset & battery :jawdrop: ) and I've decided that I fancy something new.

Also Orange have really p****d me off as they have hardly any handsets available and want to charge me more for an upgrade than it'd cost as a new user (despite the fact I've never claimed off my insurance and haven't had an upgrade since I first moved to them :grr: - they say it's something to do with OFTEL ??) anyway the long and the short of it is that I'm going to port my number over to O2 as they offer a good cross network tarrifs and have a good selection of handsets.....

So to the crux of the matter is which handset should I get? I've whittled it down to two:

The Nokia 5100 - Funky looking, splash & shock resistant, decible meter, calorie counter, torch and a few other bits and bobs... Which will be £24.99

    OR

The Nokia 6610 - More professional looking, radio, hands free speaker phone, but without the gadgets of the 5100... Which I can get for free

So which should it be, I really can't decide

I'd go for the 5100 cos i'm a bit of a clumsy fella. I've got a 5210 which has a similar shock resistant case + its been a godsend. and it always makes my mates laugh when i drop it in my pint.

    Nokia 6610 .....

There really was not even a reason to be asking about it.

The 5510 is not very easy to use, and has a wierd orange backlight to the LCD.

The 6610 has a colour screen, the buttons are really easy to use and it even has an FM radio.

    So 6610....

This will always be the case.
    [ex-salesman]
When you take out a contract with a service provider, they offer you a handset at a heavily subsidised price, to coax you onto their network. When you then come to upgrade your handset 12 months later, because you are already with your provider, and the fact that they lost out on so much money the first time round, you will end up paying more for a new handset.

Porting your number is a much easier business these days, so not sure how much of this will apply, but up till the new system was introduced, it used to take 30 days for the number to be ported. This meant that people doing it to get round paying for an upgrade often didn't actually save anything because they bought a new contract, and waited 30 days for the number to go through, in which time they've paid two month's line rental. Or they could wait for the number to go through first, but this was risky and often resulted in lost numbers, and you were almost certainly out of service for a couple of days, and the fact that there's no guarantee that you will be accepted onto the new network.
    [/ex-salesman]

    Anyway.
With regard to phones. I prefer the 6610, purely because the 5100 looks like a toy, and a pile of cack.
Personally I'd go with the 6100.

The 6610... it's much more styleish. The 5100 looks too much like a kids plaything.

Hwulex - I understand what your saying.... but orange do seem to have changed their policies recently... one of my mate owns an orange shop and even he can't get me a good deal..... apparently as oftel have sid that the networks must reduce call costs they are now charging more for handsets??? Before xmas orange were willing to offer me £50 on my old 6210 and a 7210 for £75 but now it's all changed.

As far as porting goes I did it under the old system and tbh it wasn't that bad but I'm glad it's simpler now :)

The 6100 actually has less features than the 6610 and will eventually be cheaper... aparently, it's just a little smaller and lighter - I like the speaker phone and the radio of the 6610. + they want £100+ for a 6100 and I can get the 6610 for free!!!

Thanks for the imput guys.... think I'm going to go with the 6610, I've maded my 6210 last 2+ years so I shoulf be OK without the rubberised protection of the 5100

Tell me about it. People seem to have this strange urge to chuck my phone over balconies/drop it in their pints just to "see if it really is shockproof/waterproof". Definitely a pitfall. Get a nice shiny one and people will respect it.

I'm on vodaphone at the mo. Got a three month free line rental deal and money off the phone from Phones 4u.

I'll change my tariff after the 3 months is up, as the one I'm on at the moment is about £30 a month. That does give you ludicrous amounts of air-time and texts though.

My problem is that all my mates are on Orange so really I need a tarriff with x network minutes.... 02 is the only one that does this but once your free mnuites are gone (and you use them up on landline calls as well as mobiles whick sucks) the call charges are quite high.... I guess I just need to convince all my friends to switch networks as well :hehe:

p.s. I lke your new Av :hehe: I recognise it from somewhere... is it from a film?

    My minutes are x-net.

The Av is the self destruct warning from the original Star Trek films (TOS rather than NG)
