    hi guys,

well as everyone is aware haswell has been released and i think its about time i upgraded.

However while the CPU is an easy choice 4670K

im not sure which mobo to pick ive looked at the ASUS Z87 pro and the ASrock Extreme 6 both have good reviews but not bit-tech reviews !

also not sure on which cooler to opt for - i wont be pushing the chip to its limits but a healthy 4.4Ghz-4.6Ghz would be nice.

    other kit i have is;

    Fractal R3 case with 2x 120mm front fans 1x 120mm back and 1x 140mm top.
    Corsair 650W PSU
    std DVD re-writer
    1TB samsung F3
    256GB samsung 830

The main thing to know really is what's your budget for both? The answers will vary a lot depending on that!

Currently overclocking Haswell to 4.5 or above needs some hefty cooling. Closed Loop H100i got the chip up to 90c and that was a 4770K.

The Gigabyte OC is looking at being a great board. But at a price.

    Since Bit-Tech have posted this:

You are lucky to get 4.5 according to this ^^

Fair enough - I've literally just bought (well it arrived today) an Asus Sabertooth Z87 and it's a fantastic piece of kit. Well made and solid as hell with the backplate and thermal armour installed. Properly looks the business too & has a 5 year warranty (compared to 3 years with every other board pretty much). I've not clocked the chip yet but Prime 95 on stock clocks with a H100i gives temps less than about 55° (and my room is bloody warm this evening...)

but are intel selling good ones to the oems, who don't normally pre-overclock machines, and saving the better ones for retail, who are more likely to overclock.

The MSI Z87-GD65 has had some good reviews. Personally I think I'll go for a sabertooth.

I like Asus's boards this round over the others, but some of that is the new color scheme ^^.

On a slightly off-topic note, are LGA 1155 coolers fitting LGA 1150 without new brackets?

Yep 1150 uses 1155/1156 fixing brackets.

so what makes the sabertooth worth £200 compared to say the MSI board at around £170 or the Asus pro @ £160 ?

Also any suggestions on coolers ? i think max £50 unless its worth stepping up. H100 is lovely but its £95 !!

Even worse, The Gryphon is the smaller Sabertooth, and it cost's 1/3rd less! (~£130)
    Why so much?

The ASUS Z87 Gryphon (MATX) £130
or the the ASUS Z87M-PLUS (µATX) £105
or the ASUS Z87-A (ATX) £120

If previous experiences are any indication, then i would think about the ASUS Gene and Hero boards.

I really like the Z87 PLUS. It's a good balance of price and features in my book.

As for coolers... Haswell's running hot, so probably something on a closed loop in the $60 range would be ideal if you want to do some overclocking.

i think the Asus Z87 gryphon will be enough for me i dont need the extra slots and features. As long as it can overclock decently thats enough for me.

Now on to coolers - dont really want to sink more than £50 on a CPU cooler but id be looking for 4.2Ghz+ overclock so need something that can handle that.

I was looking at the following

SilverStone Argon AR01 with maybe an extra fan although cant find a review - £25+£10
Noctua NH-D14 - £65 bit overbudget but looks a great cooler

cant have the thermalright archon as its too big 170mm !!! ive got a fractal R3 which support ~165mm

Why do you guys even think about better coolers, when it is clear the issue is bellow the IHS, so there is only a very small difference between a 20 euro tower cooler and a water cooling setup ?
