At present, even if you're out of luck and get one of those "unlucky" chips that doesn't overclock well, reviewers seem to indicate something like 4.4GHz as a minimum. Your 4.2GHz *should* be achievable on any air cooler you want.

Faugusztin is right, at your level, I'd be going for acoustics over performance.

Adam why did you go for Red Corsair Vengeance seeing as the mobo is a brown goldish colour?

Congrats on the purchases Adam. You'll have to let us know what the Gryphon is like. I was going to buy one myself but ended up going for the Gigabyte G1 M5. Unbelievable pain in the aaaass to get it all into my Corsair 350D but I got there in the end :D

i dont have a window on my case anyway so im not fussed ill take performance over looks any day. Its going to go really well with the ice blue cooler i just got lol

I would guess the lack of Bit articles was due to people being off at Computex - give it a week or so and I'd imagine that loads will start popping up :thumb:

I can confirm the new Z87 Gryphon board is a nice piece of work. The boot-into-BIOS button is a useful feature and the LEDs indicating the POST process are definitely better for troubleshooting than not having them. I don't have a speaker in my chassis so I had to rely on the LEDs for much of my setup glitches.

If you're using a matched set of memory you'll be dandy, but if you're pairing let's say a 1.65V set and a 1.5V set, the board will go through a whole bunch of tests and reboots before it works out what's going on.

Since we have the same board/CPU combo, I managed to get 4.3GHz stable at 1.19V (actual monitored value was more like 1.2 most of the time) under an old Freezer 7 pro. AIDA64 temps mid 80s after 10 minutes, then levelled off.

i think i need to re-apply my thermal paste

im getting idle 30-35 with speed step on (800mhz-1.5ghz), with load on prime95 (3.8Ghz) its 67-70 after 2 mins

did a mini overclock to 4Ghz and temps stayed the same

hmm, if you are going to buy a brand new setup, why would you choose an i5 over an i7?
from what I can see there is about an £80 difference in price. Is the performance difference between the i5 and i7 not even worth considering?

    i5 4670K = £190
    i7 4770K = £275

£85 or nearly 45% more expensive

i7 really only gets you HT and braggin rights so if your just in to gaming and dont use heavily threaded apps theres no point in buying a 4770K

I'm getting 27-29°c with speedstep on with a H100i at idle but that's with SP120 quiet fans dialled right back on a 4770k for reference (& MX-4 paste)

Edit: I might finally have some time this weekend for some OCing...
