I'm a presently unemployed Emergency Medical Technician who plans to go to school one of these days to get certified as a Paramedic. none of these make any real money, but I don't know of anything I'd rather be doing career-wise. I can't imagine spending 4 years in college, and even if I could I don't know what I'd want to do that would need a degree.

I love being a first responder, it's who I am and it's what i want to be.

4th year Artificial Intelligence and Robotics BSc for me. Spent a year working in the Intelligent Robotics Group here as part of my degree. I also keep meaning to visit the BRL sometime, some guy I met at a science fair is doing a PhD there at the moment and I'm curious to see how it's going.

    Officially? University drop out.

I started A-Levels with a mind to going into law, as such, I have some AS-Levels in English (lang/lit), sociology and history. I changed my mind at that stage, dropped out and went to college where I completed an NDITP.

Went to work for a friend of a friend who ran an IT company, did that for two years, decided to start a uni course - Network Security & Management - and discovered that, thanks to a lack of people on the course, it was attached to a business course, and that I'd be doing more business stuff than network stuff, and would only do level one of a CCNA - Something I'd consider vital for a network security course.

Quit that, and now I'm signed up to start a CCNA in January, again working for an IT support company.

I got a few GCSE's from school, then went to Darlington College of Technology and got an ND in Design and from there went to Teesside Uni on a brand new BSc (Hons) Visualisation course. I managed to pass a great deal of the first year stuff but not enough (the 3d maths and assembly language of the last semester were just too much for me). After failing that I did a HND in Business IT which kinda got me my IT support job I'm in atm. Recently, I've gained the Microsoft Certified Desktop Technician course (2 exams) and am studying to gain an MCSA, then MCSE.

    10 G.C.S.E.'s @ A-C including 3 A*'s.

Went to 6th form did Graphic Design, Art and Maths(with statistics).

Realised i was a complete douche and had only picked what i enjoyed over what i was good at.

Went back, did Physics, Chemistry and Maths(with mechanics) with the intention to into higher mathematics, possibly theoretical physics or quantum mechanics (or at least the routes towards them).

By the end of the course, realised i actually preferred 'real' work (not implying anything other than graft isn't real work, i just love the feeling of getting home kcackered knowing that i've damn well earned my money that day) and carried on lol.

Lots of extra education for no reason other than to realise what i wanted to do. I've now had several jobs of little or no importance (although ductwork was great fun, look up next time you go into Selfridges in the new Bull Ring, my handiwork).

I suppose it was all education of a form leading me to my current life though. No day in which you learn something is wasted.

Left High School with a few Scottish Highers. Joined the Air Force instead of going to Uni. 10 years later, I've seen some interesting parts of the world and know a lot of about aircraft engineering, but still no useful qualifications. Still better than some degrees I could mention though...

Did school, did A-Levels, messed them up, found out I needed to do a HND anyway to go to uni, did that, went to uni, didn't really like it, dropped out, did some crappy jobs for a while, got a job in design, did that for a few years, went travelling for a while, got back and got another job in design, did that for a few years and quit, sat around on my arse for a while, did a bit of free lance work, starting a company now.

I'm not very career orientated and I have limited interests. Just need to make a bit of cash to help pay the bills and a few luxuries really.

working towards getting my bachelors in Networking and Information Technology. I'll be going for my A+ next month, and network+ by the end of the school year if possible.

Also thinking about taking an EMT course through the local CC over the summer.... been involved with EMS for so long that it seems like a place I can see myself for the next few years.

What do all of these A-levels and GCSEs and stuff translate to in American terms? I'm confused.

Here, we have "K12" education, which is 13 years (age 5 to 18) of public education, which is free to everyone, and which is run by the town or county you live in.

That culminates in a high school diploma, which pretty much states that you are literate. It is not specialized in any individual subject.

From there, many people go into the work force. Others go to a trade school or vocational school, which is a specialized program of 6 months to 2 years that trains you for a specific job.

Others pursue college/university (they're the same thing on this side of the pond).

2 years for an associate's (generally something menial like being an office assistance) or 4 years for a bachelors (just about everything else - from writing and art, to business, to science)

After bachelors, Masters (2 additional years or so) or Ph.D, JD (lawyer), MD (doctor) (all much longer than a Masters)

How do A-levels and GCSEs and that stuff translate?

First Class Honours Bachelor's Degree in Music Technology.
First Class Honours Master's Degree in Computer Music/Audio Software.
Just started my MLitt/PhD this Autumn.

Researching the topic of hybridising electronic instruments (such as keyboards/synthesizers) and desktop-class computers via custom Linux distros and computer music languages such as Csound and Max/MSP. :)

Expecting to do a project log here eventually on a part of my PhD topic. ;)

well... not free... we all pay for it (some indirectly) with our school taxes, just like our roadwork, fire departments, etc.
