You can't anyway, doesn't it just cache the executable in the temp files? Or have I missed something. Good point though anyway speco' :)

Another Opera user here, though I generally switch between whichever's nearest to my cursor if I just need to look something up quickly. I've got IE, Firefox and Opera installed for testing websites I develop, but I think Opera has the advantage in that it can do a huge number of things out of the box which other browsers require plugins/extensions for. For example, I can install Opera and within five minutes be on IRC, while checking my email - not to mention actually surfing. :)

I saw a very good argument (on a web developer's forum) that the "Firefox mentality" is selfish, irresponsible and very much against the people running websites, both amateur and professional. Think about it. Top 5 extensions based on downloads include
    • Flashgot - (using /all) uses extra bandwidth, often wasted, costs sites money with no increase in visitors or income
    • Fasterfox - uses extra bandwidth, largely wasted, costs sites money with no increase in visitors or income
    • Adblock - cuts advertising revenue many sites (like Bit) rely on to stay online.
The old "With freedom comes responsibility" tag.

I've no doubt that I'll be burnt to a crisp for this, but... I use IE and I find nothing wrong with it :cooldude:

It's fast - yes, I know this is because it's built into Windows, but so what? That doesn't make me want to use Firefox, which is slightly slower. The startup time has improved, but FF still seems to munch RAM for me, even with the newest version.

It's simple - I'm not a big fan of browsers with huge amounts of integrated features. All I want is back button, a refresh button and an address bar. Slap Google Toolbar onto the top of that and it's a winner. I'll admit that Firefox's extension system is a league ahead of IE's ActiveX controls, but I'm pretty happy with it as it is. I did go through a period of using Firefox, but it seemed a bit cumbersome.

I'm not terribly bothered about security, either. I keep up to date with Windows Update and keep an eye on sites which would report the latest big bug. Firefox isn't exactly immune to security flaws; it's just that it is exploited less. I've never become infected with anything from an IE flaw and I doubt that I ever will be.

Tabbed browsing isn't a big thing for me, either. I usually have a maximum of 4 IE windows open at once, and two of those are usually way past the interest point and can be closed without consequence.

i too have to use IE, and although i really HATE IT ( that is why i started this thread), its still a good all round program. sure i despise the design of it, but it works and thats all its supposed to do. (I STILLL HATE IT THOUGH)

mabey we should start a petition to have microsoft ship all their windows packages with a choise of internet programs, they dont loose money, and i don't get gay MSN.

Just buy a stress ball if it bothers you that much, we don't really want people whining about a program they dislike all the time when IE and Microsoft are bashed enough as it is.
Why? It's their software- they designed it, they programmed it, we bought it. If you don't like it, tough imo. There's nothing stopping you from using other browsers, why on earth would Microsoft include a competitor's product within their own?!

Fasterfox, not Firefox. Fasterfox will background download to your cache the pages from each and every static link on the page visited "just in case" you decide to click on one of them. That could be a few score pages with a nested menu system. You might decide to visit 5. Rest wasted.

Firefox has a similar prefetch ability, but in accordance with W3 standards only uses it when the website code tells it to. That can be useful to a site author, saves having to write javascript routines to pre-load stuff that you hope visitors will click on.

By demand from site owners, Fasterfox 1.01+ has been modified so it can be turned off by the site, but (a) it doesn't always work, (b) they have to find out how.

Wow...considering the number of links on the new posts page of a forum like bit-techs, that must be a real nightmare. I quickly counted roughly 100 links on a page like that. A regular user goes to one, a user using fasterfox and say, 8mb/s DSL, downloads all 100 pages that those links goto. Thats crazily wastefull.

I have to use IE at school and cant stand it... i use firefox because the tabbed browsing is so much better than opening multiple windows, and Firefox has a inbuilt search engine which you can add more engines of your own choice, plus its got a awesome logo :D

ahh, I see. my fault I misread.

another reason I like FIREfox :) over IE is that I can get FF allot cleaner and it iwll stay that way. im not continualy pesterd to add a toolbar or do this or that. I have my google toolbar, go, forward, back, refresh, and a addy bar. thats it. couple that with tabbed browsing and it feels cleaner and more prone to productivity. The only plugin I have is spiderzilla... and thats actualy on mozilla because they havent revised it for FF (I think)

So long as you have your own document area, do what I did and download a portable Firefox/Opera. I have them both on my account and on my pen drive :)

In that case, you need the in-line spell checker extension. ;)

Does that option come checked by default? I know mine's disabled, but it's been so long since I installed the thing that I don't remember. However yes, it's very wasteful with that enabled and is probably a memory hog as well. The note underneath makes it look like it's not on by default.

I only really use fasterfox for the timer in the corner. For those times you thought you clicked the link but failed to... you can see pretty quick the timer isn't going :D

However with Adblock, a lot of people are just using it to block the senseless (omg 10000 free smilies!!1) and/or popup ads. I don't know why companies still use popups, everyone hates them and I know for sure that I'd never purchase from company if I see a popup with their name on it. What arguably becomes a problem is if you use the (very useful) filterset.g updater for Adblock, which makes it so you don't see just about any flash ads by default (it automatically updates the block list). However I've gone out of my way to whitelist Bit so their ads still show. I don't ever look at them (mostly because they dissapear half a second after they load, which I can't stop), but I want to do what I can to keep the site running.

I think what will come out of things like Adblock is the realization that advertising is becoming steadily less useful, and companies have to find other ways to get their name out. You know, making your product stand out and all that. Product Darwinism, in effect, will be the result - make a desirable product/service, or just give up on the thing.
