In the yearly desperate (and often successful) attempt to ruin my TV, the NBA has returned again (sigh). But this time, they've brought a new twist...it shows on TNT network many nights, and they seem to have picked up the spokesman "Ali G".

At first, I found this to be even more rubbish than the sport already is. The guy was annoying, stupid, and not even funny. Until he starts conducting this interview with a Canadian guy....and said "Ya know, I don even know why I discussin dis to you, you're Canadian....you don even speak English. " Interrupted by the basketball dude, he says "No, you don even speak English. You speak Canada." Interrupteed again, he says "I cant understan you when you don speak English...Stop talking in your Canada..."

The skit went on for the 30 second commercial and had me rolling. For a second, it was hilarious how blatantly and rudely he was making fun of how the Canadians talk, because we as Americans mock them all the time (without much merit, but hey, why not?). Then I suddenly realized it was HIM who was the joke...the comic created a persona of the utter epitome of American urban culture. And I laughed so hard I really hurt.

I finally asked my wife if she'd heard of this guy (I'm a little unaware of TV trends sometimes), and she said he's really big over in England. Now, the guy completely lampoons American culture, so I can understand this. :D But is he really popular over there? He's now on HBO (which I don't watch), but I didn't know if he started with success across the pond before he came here.

By the way, as typical with us Yanks and British humor, most people here don't seem to get it...they find it funny for all the wrong reasons, never realizing it's them being insulted (which makes it even funnier in my book).

Yeah he went to cambridge. Borat is more funny imo. Did you see the one where he went to a hunting protest? That made me laugh so hard i coughed up a lung.

I havnt seen the american version, but when he was on tv here (it was a good few years ago tbh) it was very popular, and took the piss out of what i guess has now become known to some extent as chavs. Although it was slightly different back then.
EAST STAINES MASSIF Cheesecake. The film "ali g in da house" is great.

He used to be funny the alternative queens speech he did on channel4 had me in stitches but his american show was a bit poor except for the odd sketch, like when he became a cop and wanted to beat and shoot everyone.

I liked his interview with Buzz Lightyear Aldrin. And when he becomes a cop for a day or something. A strange type of comedy, but funny nonetheless.

I heard Indahouse sucked (at least relative to the TV show), but I haven't seen it myself so I can't say.

[Animal Rights Protester] "Why do you shoot bears in Kazakhstan?"
    [Borat] "Errr....for fun."
[Animal Rights Protester] "You're an evil b'tard. P*** Off!"
[Borat] "I do not kill fox!"
[Animal Rights Protester] "But you kill bears?"
[Borat] "There is no more bear in Kazakhstan!"

    Ooooooooh the memories :hip:

Yeah, thats why he's so funny on two levels. Over here he has the usual low level easy to get not good jokes/whatever that chavs/neds like, but he also has the fact that he's making fun of his target audience, which is what he really does thats funny, and when you realise that, its brilliant.

He doesn't just lampoon US culture, he does the same with any culture he's going to be broadcast to :D

His TV shows were highly amusing, the movie wasn't though. His gay German character, Bruno, was pretty poor but really did have its moments. Ali G in the USA was really awesome just because nobody got it - the one where he went to the LAPD (NYPD?) was bloody hilarious.
