I don't get what the big fuss is in sound quality.
If i'm playin Moby on my UltrX reciever and JVC speakers, it sounds the same as on the Yamaha amp and the Technics speakers. Or the sound card in my Dell and Panasonic headphones. The one think thta pisses me off is static, and the only thimes this has happened to me is with radio or some of the first solid state amps.

A 10.2 surround sound system comprising of 10 Krell Master Reference Amps hooked upto x (whatever your preference is) speakers and the .2 being handled by two Krell Master Reference Subs would be somewhat impressive, :)

Yep that would sound very very nice indeed, although personally if I had the money I would not pay $54,000 retail (and a lot more here in the UK) for the subwoofers.

For those who are a dab hand at DIY, I would run a 6 Tempests in IB (Infinate Baffle configuration) or a four pack of Adire Audio Tumalts with Linkwitz Transform circuit and run 1.5 kw to each.

That would be equilvent output to 6-8 Velodynes HGS 18's enough to output a smile on anyones face.

You would obvously use a propery designed acousticly treated room with multi channel EQ provding a ruler flat frequency responce and balenced levels with in 1db of each other.

TEAC make very good reference amplifiers. They have a very pure sound, and good linear response.

Other than that, make your own amplifier. You can usually build a high quality amplifier for a very reasonable price, and know that you've used high quality components.

these best speaker/amp etc threads are a bit silly
like people voting for teh likes of sony or whatever for best speaker, get real.
a more suitable title would be best budget amp, best mid market amp, high end amp or ulta high end amp.

best means the best ever than money can buy, most of the companies that make teh "best" speakers and amps noone has ever heard of.

like the "best networking gear" thread i saw a while back, there were options like d-link and netgear right next to options like cisco. sorry but i think poll for things like this are silly, lets do a best car poll shall we, options are lada, skoda and kia. they are the best arent they??

    sorry

Yes you are correct there is no "best" amplifer, there are different amplifiers for different needs and budgets.

Better polls would be what good amplifiers are there for a certain Price-Preformance ratio OR amplifiers value for money?

There is more than price range - what is the "best" amp?
    Lots of watts?
    surround sound?
    dolby decoding?
    reliability?
    ease of use?
    sound quality?
    feautures?
sex appeal? //If this is the basis for a good amp, then my Bradofrd IC FET is the best amp
    cool displays?

Is this reciver or amplifier we are talking about?

Recievers combine dolby decoding, surround sound, tuner, input switching, DSP, and displays with an amplifier.

AN amplifier puts out more power but purely adds power to the signal.

Recievers are very compromised to have all of this, an ideal setup would most likely consist of seprate dedicated components for each function. It would have a tuner box, an input switcher, a dolby decoder, a spectrum analyzer, and an amplifier.

I'd consider giving my right arm for a few McIntosh MC1201 monoblocks!

You guys ever hear these things? Un-freakin-believable sound quality and levels! Best sounding amp I've ever heard in my life and I've listened to a LOT! Everything from NAD to Marantz to high-end Yamaha to Rogue.

exactly what i mean, "best amp" should mean best dedicated poweramp, best meaning that there isnt one on the planet which outperforms. in my opinion the "best amp" is a krell master reference amplifier, but that is merely an opinion as i have never heard anything else that could even start to match its quality and im sure that most people never will. most companies that make equals to these kinds of beasts of amps are barely ever heard of by the general public.

    sorry a bit more rant.

i like my phase linear 400 poweramp, though it wont hold its own against anything even approaching "best" status i love it and its bloody loud (400wrms@4ohm .0002 thd @ 117db, off the top of my head, it was serviced/tested about a year ago) its driving a pair of epicure 400s

i think the best amp ive ever heard was a Quad amp that had Quadraphonic sound (lol, a bit dated i know) . It was from the 70's or 80's cant remember which but it sounded so good.

Some old hifi is still so good, like good old bbc monitors
