No ****ing wonder there's so much political apathy in Wales, when it comes to the media we're a ****ing footnote at best. As to the House of Lords.... Generally I'm fine with the House of Lords. What I'm not fine with is hereditary peerage, peerages for bishops, and prime ministers being able to stuff the Lords full of their own chosen lackeys.
Guess I'll say that moving to an all elected upper house is an inherently bad idea. Proponents of it assume it will be filled with 'their' people. Based on the last election we would have had a Commons and a Lords with a two thirds majority for the Conservatives, which would have been even worse than the situation is now, hard as that is to imagine. Imagine every Brexit bill going through The Lords without opposition first time. If it ran on proportional representation then I could see it working, but it won't, because the incumbent party never wants it until they're in the minority. Limits on the number of appointments per 5 years would be a better start. Or a 1 in 1 out system, if a party elevates a lord, they must also remove a lord that they themselves previously elevated.
'the Lords' - concept, fine... they do their job of telling the govt 'this is bollocks, try again' mostly well. them being appointed rather than elected doesn't bother me as much it maybe should. the execution is the problem... how they're selected/appointed - problem the fact they're life appointments - problem the fact the unelected house is currently larger than the elected one - problem the fact there's reserved seats for members of the church - [imo] big-ass problem.
