It's on the list of what to do within the next 5 years. My next overseas holiday WILL be chernobyl. Being born in '86 might have something to do with the fascination though

After checking the Wikipedia entry on Chernobyl, I read that Ukraine is going to completely open up the ZoA for tourists this year.

It's still there isn't it? I personally think for the rest of time they should keep it there with the intention of keeping it as a national park, maybe when the rad's die down in Pripyat they could do work here and there (on the bigger building) to prevent them collapsing, but keep the area free of human life from now on kind of thing?

Im not sure about the vehicle graveyard they said some of the metal was sold for scrap the decontaminated bits but im not sure its really worth the effort

The liquidator vehicles are still there though they are giving of way to much radiation

Thing is when you look at those pictures you think "oh thats cool" when you think "Death for anyone not protected" it's pretty scary how we can't see the radiation and yet it could kill us so evily.

I honestly wish we could decontaminate as much of the major stuff as possible and turn it into a wildlife-preserve/nature park. Humanity should never settle on the soil of the ZoA again in my eyes, serves as a decent remind of our own madness and fragile existance in my eyes as said before.

I'd honestly love to get decked out in CBRN kit and wander around these places, Especially the CNPP. I wonder how long it will take until the area is declared "clear"...

The vehicle graveyard is there, but the rotors on that chopper will have gone, much like all the engines in the trucks you can see, and the ones you can't.

Turns out, a dose of radiation is nothing compared to looting ;)

    http://www.carlmontgomery.com/radiation/

I've linked that before, but he does a fairly good video tour of the Chernobyl/Pripyat site with a local guide (I love how they pay off the site guards with some American dollars).

The radiation dose there now isn't that high, unless you get inside the reactor. Which, apparently, is doable given the current state of the sarcophagus. Although, there are plans to build a bigger, stronger, one due to the currently precarious state of the reactor lid - If that falls, the plume of radioactive material would knock ten shades of **** out of the current sarcophagus.

Would I like to go there?

Absolutely. I even know who I'd invite to go with me.

Indeed we've already mentioned the new sarcophagus (every time I say that I think of Stargate damnit).

It's a shame the resolution isn't higher, but that's one of the vehicle graveyards. Strange, though, that the choppers still have the majority of their rotorblades, a fair few of the others that were used have been missing for some time. The engines, though, will be gone from the trucks.

According to wikitravel, that's been shut off for tours since 2008, supposedly the radiation levels are too high to go in without protective gear. How accurate that is, I couldn't say.

As I've said before, I do find it fascinating, mainly as a big part of human history, but I still think I'd be pretty hesitant about going. Isn't it still classed as one of the most dangerous "safe looking" places on earth to visit because of the radiation?

I've had a quick flick through some websites and some areas are literally "Go here, you will die" while others aren't apparently.

I'd happily take a rad meter (Can't spell it right so won't try... geiger?) and check around, I'd have a proper good snoop in red forest and stuff.

Personally, I'd not go into the forest.

Purely because those trees and plants have been growing using radioactive water for the last 24 years.

Carl Montgomery's video shows a reasonable demonstration of the Geiger counter reading lower amounts on paved roads than when on even a few inches of soil on a piece of concrete.

I'd agree that there are some death inducing areas (I'd suspect anything with a large metal content, vehicle graveyards for example, and anything with large areas of vegetation/soil) and some not so much, which I suppose is the best reason for having a guide, as well as them knowing where not to go in regards to "shoot on sight" policies etcetera.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who'd go

"Guide, geiger counter the sign for me..."
    *no radiation of lethality*
    "Excellent..."
    *group walks off*

*cut to image of BRAWL borrowing one of the trucks from the graveyard and knocking the sign over and to steal it*

You know, it's not just the fact that the whole area is loaded with radiation that would make me uneasy about going there, it's also the fact that this all happened in part of the former Soviet Union, and it's still considered "Soviet Soil" today, because it's a snapshot in time of the USSR as it was then.

That both fascinates and freaks the hell outta me :p
