What's the resolution you are playing at? Try decreasing the resolution. It might help.

You could turn down the AA/AF, which is what I think would kill it, or the resolution.

    Running it at 1280x1024

And I have disabled anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering but it's still unplayable and no v sync isn't enabled.

Is your GTX280 stuck at 2D clocks?

Could it be the 2Gb of RAM holding you back? Crysis is a pretty demanding game, I reckon another 2Gb should sort you.

He said pair of 2 gig so I'm guessing he means 4 gig total. Hopefully anyway!

It's probably temperature related. First thing to check is that video and sound drivers are up to date. Then check the temps. Do you know what your CPU temperature is while playing the game? It's a common issue that when a heatsink isn't fitted perfectly on to the CPU, it can overheat. And an overheating CPU can shut itself down to a fraction of the speed to protect itself.

I believe he said a pair of 2gb OCZ reapers.

Does it struggle with other games or is it just Crysis?

What you didn't mention is the power supply - the 280 is quite hungry, as is the Q9650 - is it getting enough power?

Really should read posts properly >.<

Like Chombo said, try re-installing the drivers, or update to the latest ones.

Have you tried running it in DX9 mode instead?

    yes I have 4gigs at 5-5-5

    I have a 520 watt corsair psu
the gtx280 is running at 600 core 1100 memory (default clocks)
I have windows seven installed so the rest of my drivers are up to date
I have the latest graphics driver from nvidia

I overclocked the gtx to 725 core and 1240 memory and it increased the fps by 3
I also tried to overclock the CPU but I couldn't get it passes 3.4ghz ( I don't want to overclock any More so I put it bak to default as I don't have Enough money for a new CPU or gpu )
    I have a dfi x48 mobo
    what next

I don't know how to force the game to run in dx9...

I use speed fan to moniter the temps and the quad core stays below 40 and the graphics ( stock cooler) maxxes out at 65 wen under serious gaming. these temps are ok I guess I have ran a stress test on the graphics card and It didint find any artifacts so I'm guessing that the gpu if not broken

    Something doesn't add up here.

That spec of PC should easily play Crysis at Very High at 1280x1024 with no AA or AF.

Either something is broken, or your trolling, :D.

Have you tried removing the overclock on all components.

Fwiw ive just started playing crysis,

    My specs are:
    i5 750 (at stock again)
    4gb ram
    GTX275 lightly overclocked

Ive only played the first 2 sections, and my fps havent dropped below 28. Thats at 1920x1080 with all settings on high DX10 no AA or AF.

Something sounds very wrong, under crysis my 275 hits 80+, Like elton said it sounds like your card is trying to run the game under 2d specs.

cry engine 2 is very fragile when it comes to rampant OC'ing

do you get pausing and stuttering at random intervals, possibly when looking at indoor light sources or flickering trees in the distance?

I use to have a QX9650 plus a BFG gtx280. I could run crysis very high 1920x1200 with 2xAA fine.
You should be able to play Crysis maxed with 16xQ AA at that low res.

Why would you have system like that with out at least a 22"monitor with a resolution of at least 1680x1050?

    Simon.
