    Hey all!

I thought I'd pop over to the UK for a bit to see if any of you guys have had any experiences similar to my own - the guys over here in Australia are baffled...

Well, it all started out okay. Six months ago I built my rig, and it has been great, all up until 2 weeks ago...

Out of the blue, my pump stopped - I was lucky to have the RivaTuner automatic shutdown scheduled! Anyway, after having a play with the pump (Laing Vario D5), it would run for a period of time (anywhere from 20 seconds up to a few minutes) and then just shut down (and put the PSU into standby as well).

So I figured the pump must be broken, and replaced it with another D5. This went for all of about 20 seconds before it stopped as well! I figured then that is must be the PSU (Coolermaster RealPower 1kW), and grabbed a spare PSU to test it out - with some success. It ran fro about an hour and then just completely stopped! So, I have deduced it is not the pump, and not the PSU either...hmmmm

I decided then to pull it all out and check the blocks and pumps for blockages - to my surprise, they were all extremely clean, and had no problem with flow.

I then put the cooling system back together (outside the case) and tried to fill and run it. This time the *new* D5 wouldn't even start! So, put the old one back on and again, it ran for about 2 minutes and then stopped!

I can't figure this one out!!

The pump seems okay. (Except for the new one).
    The PSU seems okay.
The rads, pump and blocks are all blockage free.

    What I have tried:
    Use a different pump................... FAIL
    Use a different PSU......................FAIL
    Check for blockages.....................FAIL

Can any of you guys help? I figure you have all been doing it a lot longer than we have over here, so might see things from a different perspective.

Why would the pump have stopped in the first place?
Why does the new one seem to not work at all?

    I really need your help!!

More info (of questions other users have posted) are in this thread...

    Thanks all!

    Justin

From his other thear link in the post.

"Fluid wise, I was using distilled/demineralised water with Pentosin G11 additive."

Sorry can't help with this one. PSU would spring to mind, but you say its been tried. *shrugs*

Occam's razor would suggest that the problem lies with both pumps. Have you compared their batch production/serial no.'s?

I'd RMA your recent purchase and go for third-time-lucky.

I have done a quick Google on the internet and there are other mentions of inexplicably failing D5's:

    http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=153588

    http://www.overclock.net/water-cooling/237682-laing-d5-rebuild.html

It is also mentioned to have a 1-2% failure rate --which is still better than other pumps on the market.

I guess pump failure is the most likely scenario, but it just seems so damn unlucky... I am going to send back the original one, as that runs, then stops (and plus I have an RMA number for it), and I'll hit them up for an RMA for the new one (which now doesn't even start at all). $AU125 is a lot for a pump, and I just can't buy another one...

With regards to the pumps specifically, they are Swiftech labelled Laing D5 Vario's (I assume most of them do that?), and the first two serial numbers are the same...

As for adding new devices - no. I wish it was that simple! The worst thing is that it just stopped out of the blue, right after I got knocked back for a job via email! Hows the luck in that?!?

PSU wise - I tried different ports on my CM RealPower (it's a modular one) and then tried a different PSU (cheapy out of an old HP) with basically the same effect....

Thanks again for the help guys!

    Definitely RMA.
I doubt you will get 3 bad ones (people do get 2 bad products, especially if they are from the same batch and older stock, maybe you can try and force their hand and get a newer model if one exists?

The point is you lost valuable time and money in this and should be compensated properly. Express delivery at the very least for your trouble!

I hope it is your pump, always a nightmare actually defining what it is that is that is causing the angst.

Yeah, me too! The pump would be the most straightforward to replace.

One of the guys over here suggested it may also be the PSU over-juicing the pump and recommended a voltmeter to see what was happening. The only thing it doesn't explain is why it just stops, but then is able to be started later... And why the second one then (running on a different HP PSU) ran for so long, and then stopped altogether!

    Stupid boody things.
