I'm in Edinburgh and our regular bin collection (grey bin = landfill waste) took place as usual yesterday. The green (recycling) bin was collected as normal last Friday, and will be picked up again next Friday. So in other words, it's been business as usual for us over the festive period.

I know that depending on exactly where in the city you live, your bins will be picked up on different days, but our bins have certainly been collected as normal. Not much consolation to you, Kronos, but at the same time perhaps evidence that Edinburgh Council is not wholly incompetent?

We have five recycling containers: three full-sized wheelie bins (green for recyclable cardboard/paper, tins, some plastics; brown for garden waste; grey for landfill); a box for glass, batteries, small electrical appliances and textiles; finally, there's a caddy for food waste. We also have a couple of compost bins which were subsidised (cost about a fiver a skull iirc). So I think it's fair to say the Edinburgh takes recycling pretty seriously.

It really does depend on the area if you are staying in perhaps Duddingston, The Grange, Morningside and the the ilk then there does not seem to be an issue but the poorer areras do have ongoing issues. But just take a look at Edinburgh councils own FB page which is awash and not just at this time of the year, of posts concerning the poor pick up service generally for recycling in Edinburgh.

Oh and as for the council not being wholly incompetent can I just throw in the Trams fiasco, the road development in George street which had to be reinstated to the original layout. Incompetent is an understatement. Both these costs the council or us residents hundreds of millions of pounds in extra costs.

Kronos, with you on this. My rubbish collection where I live is woeful. Its been made worse with the fact that I now have to pay a further £60 a year to have my garden waist collected.

I'm sorry, but I most certainly do not live in a "posh" area of Edinburgh :D

Here we have eco points, where you find 3 big color coded bins. I used separate everything and do every thing correctly.
These days i only separate the glass. Why? The yellow bin (for plastics and stuff) is used as an everything bin. Every single time i would go put a bag full of plastic in to that bin i would find used diapers, food, paper, all the random stuff. The straw that broke the camel's back was when i found it full of s***.
I always keep an eye out if it becomes better. The reality is that it has become worse.

So yeah. Why bother when there are people that don't give a f*** and make your work null.
