I bought a 32 inch LCD Toshiba today, and it is a great reviewed television. I am wondering why when I watch cable and i look at the settings it says it is on 480i. Do I have to buy HD cable from my provider, or can I change this through the settings?
If you aren't watching an HD channel, there is your problem. 720p is an HD standard, unlike 480p/i which is SD. Most channels are only SD. If you are watching an HD channel, then make sure that you have an HD cable connecting the box to the TV. SCART is SD, the only real TV HD connection is HDMI. If you are watching an HD channel, and your cable is HD, (and the box is HD) then there might be a problem.
You need to make sure your cable box is connected to your tv using a hdmi lead. You may also need to change the settings on your cable box to display at 1080p.
Almost right... In UK and Europe it is 704x576 or 720x576 whereas in the USofA it is 704x480 or 720x480. Just for the sake of clarity. But yes as lp rob1 said, Standard Definition broadcast is only going to be either 480 or 576p or i Also nowhere will broadcast in higher than 720p AFAIK due to the bandwidth required,
Careful there. I assume by broadcast you are referring to radio wave only as there are true 1080p Sat and Cable channels. BTW: in Germany there is DVB-T at 1080p(Pro7 and SAT1), not sure about UK.
Really???? I stand corrected! I was not aware of any 1080p channels. Not that I'm doubting you, but can you let me know which ones as I wasn't aware of any.
At least in the US, almost everything Verizon FIOS broadcasts is 1080i. I believe that some of the other big ones such as Comcast do some 1080i stuff, but they might be strictly 720p.
You will need to be connected using a HDMI cable first off. The Freesat/cable/freeview box must be a HD capable unit. The output of said freesat/cable/freeview box should be set to the desired resolution (720p 1080i). The unit will upscale the image to the selected resolution, for example - I am currently looking at more4+1 - TV is stating it is 1080i - as that is the resolution being output (albeit upscaled) by the freesat HD box I am using. The channel is broadcast in low res but upscaled.
Nor me. All the channels I get through Virgin HD say 1080i, same as through Freeview HD. If Sky HD is 1080p, I'd be surprised.
Nothing in the UK (last time I checked) is broadcast at 1080, if your TV is saying 1080i it means it's receiving an upscaled 720i image. This is definitely true of Virgin HD. Check those pixels up close if you're not convinced. SD in UK is not 720x576, but 1024x576.
I'm not convinced. Using Wikipedia as a source (dangerous, I know) the first channel I looked at, BBC HD, is broadcast in 1080i. I can't find a single channel that broadcasts in 720 so I'd be mighty interested in the source for what you say.
All SKY HD channels broadcast at 1080i as do BBC HD, ITV HD to name the most common. These have done so since inception (BBC HD Test channel was 1080i). This is taken directly from their own site FAQ's - and being a regular on AVforums there are plenty of discussions over there over the years.
A technical contact at ITV. If the situation has changed since then I suppose I stand corrected. I'm willing to believe BBC broadcast at 1080i if you say so. I'd almost rather it were 720i considering the amount of bit-reduction they do. Discovery HD looks barely better than SD.
