Why does my pc feel the need to turn it's self on?

Probably a ghost. Just hire a professional spirit worker or shaman and it'll be fine.

Most likely cause is having WoL (Wake on LAN) enabled as yodasarmpit mentioned. Check your BIOS and turn it off if it's on. If it's not, unplug the buttons from the case and see if it stops.

Edit: Actually, while you're at it, turn off Wake on Ring and Wake on PCI PM Event (or similar) too.

My PC does the same thing, and its not wake on LAN because I can see what happens to mine. I turn it off, then a minute or so later the power light will flash. THen it'll flash every few seconds and after about 3 minutes of doing this, it'll just turn itself on.

Regular flashing usually indicates that the machine is in sleep mode. Check that the BIOS is configured correctly to shut down rather than suspend when you hit the power button.

I forgot to mention, it does the same thing when I turn it on. I have to leave the pwoer socket off at night, then turn it on. If I don't get the timing right between turning the socket on in the morning, and hitting the power button, it'll flash once and not turn on, then do the regular flashing thing until it turns itself on a few minutes later.

And I don't think its in sleep mode because the fans aren't running, and they just jerk forwards when it flashes.

Have you added any new hardware recently?

I had a problem once, when i added a PCI graphics card, every time i shut down, it would restart again. No idea way. I just removed the card, and worked fine. There must have been some sort of conflict.

My HTPC turns itself on, quite often around 9pm, but only since I installed Vista. It never did it with MCE 2005. I've made sure all the obvious options were off in the BIOS but it still does it!

I get this too .. within 10 mins it's usually turned itself back on again (from S3 sleep).

I've always put it down to some scheduled task or something (like windows wants to defrag the disk desperately, or index something...)

Not worked out how to stop it doing it!

    Try this:
Go to Device Manager => Network adapters
Right click on [Your NIC] => Properties => Power Management

Tick all three boxes, click OK.
    Restart
