One of my guilty pleasures is watching come dine with me catch up TV on Channel4. For some reason my it seems to bring my computer to it's knees.

    I'm running an i5-2500k @4.4, 8GB ddr3 1600 and 280x 3GB with win10

yet when I start a show my computer seems to lose responsiveness, especially when switching from advertising to the actual content. If I let the ads play in the background the responsiveness is so significant that I can tell when the show is ready to watch despite looking at another tab. I've had this problem when I was running Firefox 32bit and still do on Firefox 64bit developers edition. What is the cause of the sluggish responsiveness? I don't get it from YouTube or other streaming sites that I have noticed.

One of the more obvious symptoms is that my mouse movement stutters.

What's happening here is your computer would prefer to kill it's self instead of streaming come dine with me.

I could argue FLASH steaming is the problem here. Have you tried a CHROME plated steamer?

As far as I know channel 4 uses HTML5 not flash, possibly Silverlight but that's unlikely. Try Chrome and see what happens.

I had the same issue with 4OD on a much lower specd system that with it too.

    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200 2.2 GHz Dual Core, 4 Gig RAM and 1 Gig Radeon 7470.

Yet using my YouView box the experience is so much better :)

4oD is the worst streaming service ever known to man.

I try to stream on my ipad: no, your device is jailbreaked.
I try to stream on my laptop: no, your browser isn't good enough.
I try to stream on my laptop with Chrome: watch bizillian adverts in ultra high bit-rate and ultra-sonic definition, followed by sub-SD actual TV program.

Might as well watch better programs on other streaming services.

Come Dine with me is on Really and More4 as well as Food Network, all freeview.
(I know this unfortunately fact because my wife likes it)

Thanks, I will try alternative sources. It's just a stupid show we play in the background while eating dinner.

    Yeah, yeah...

Weirdly I've always had the opposite experience with Flash and HTML5 content both, wherein Chrome is laggy and intermittently hits low framerates after a few hours in the same browser session but Firefox/Palemoon and Internet Explorer work faultlessly. Specifically, Youtube, Homestar Runner (don't judge me, it's amazing) and Netflix all gradually slow down and become buggier and less responsive in Chrome but work smoothly and continuously in the rest.

FWIW Channel 4's on-demand service is getting a rebrand [and hopefully a revamp] tomorrow - 4oD become 'All4'

It's not like they can make it any worse...
