I just found Generation Kill in my mailbox. I bought it at http://www.bookdepository.co.uk. About a year ago I first discovered this site through a thread here, and when I purchased some books, I got a free bookmark. You know, those paper rectangles with branding by the shop itself, which are so damn useful. Must have cost all of a quarter of a cent to them. Now I don't get those anymore, and I think that's a real waste! First of, I read multiple books at the same time, so having a bookmark for each book is awesome. You can just leave the bookmark in the book, grab another book, and be assured that there will be one in that one as well. Now I need to switch them and often they get lost or I just can't find anything decent to put between the pages. It's a hassle. On the other side, it's a plus for them too. Everytime I open the book with one of their bookmarks, I am reminded of their shop. That's just good advertisement! I don't understand why they're not doing it anymore. They're in this awesome position where they can supply me, a target market since I already buy stuff from them, with something truly useful to me, which is basically an ad on a piece of hardened paper, at a very, very low expense. Why don't they exploit this? They could even sell ads on one side of the bookmark to other companies and even make money, on top of the increased customer service and brand awareness. Why don't they do this anymore?
It's because you are getting older. As you get older, everything was better/cheaper/higher quality when you were younger. It's a law of the universe. Soon you will be shaking your fist in the air at those "mangy kids". Tbh, the best thing to do is to buy a pack of 10-15 thin metal ones. I prefer the long ones, that go into the pages. My wife likes the clip ones that slide over the pages.
They should do bookmarks with every book, or bible style pieces of ribbon to mark the page... Most of what I read is from the library, so even if there was a book mark, someone pinched it ages ago Still, not too hard to make a bookmark I suppose... I usually just fold the corner down... Lol. Elderly relix.
There's always one or two blank pages at either the front or back of the book. Tear one out - instant bookmark.
Noooooo I guess I'll have to purchase some then. modgodtanvir, Mister_Tad, I personally feel it's blasphemy to damage a book. This includes folding or tearing (wtf?) it, writing in it or underlining things. So that's a no go But still it baffles my mind that they don't exploit this.
To be honest, even if I don't have a bookmark at hand, there's always a useless piece of paper or something lying around that I can stick in- all it needs to do is mark the page after all.
Amen to that. Now you come to mention it, none of the books I've bought from Waterstones recently have come with a bookmark. There are a few small bookshops in town that do give you a free bookmark with the shop's name and number on it, but they generally don't have what I'm looking for. Otherwise a Post-it Note, bit of envelope or old print-out are pressed into service.
My trusty bookmark that has served me about 6 years now came from when I was Canada.... And yes any damage to books is sacrilege
I just tend to find something thin and flat to stick in my books, and if I cant find anything I would just remember the page number.
I've got a few hanging around (the last was a magnetic Mr Men bookmark that my nephew got me) - but I can usually never find them when I want one - so I just make my own with a spare bit of card.
I usually just remember what page I left off at, or just stop at chapters. I always end up losing bookmarks.
I don't lose bookmarks as such. It's just that I have a tendency to leave the bookmarks in the book once I've finished them, and then they go on the shelf. So I've still got loads of bookmarks...somewhere.
I lost all boookmarks I've ever has, so now I use pennies or other change I'm too tight (poor) to lose them + it's an incentive to finish the book, get your change back
