I was building a sign for my University LAN party student organization (which I'll post in the Modding section when its all finish...gimme a week or two ). I was wearing my saftey goggles for ALL but one cut in the aluminum I'm using, and wouldn't you know it, I got a piece of a dremel cutting disk, and a chunk of aluminum in my eye. I spent 2 hours having the Eye doctor dig the stuff out of my eye today, and thanks to it, I'll have a problem seeing out of it for the next week or so. The GOOD news is, the Doc said if the larger piece would have hit 0.5mm to the side (didn't specify which side, as I cannot see where the stuff hit my eye because they were actually pretty small), I could have ir-iversably damaged my sight. SOOO, let my $400 (there goes my case mod money...) Doctor bill be a lesson to you, ALWAYS, ALWAYS wear your eye protection...even if it is just a "quick trim/deburring" like mine was. Oh, and I would have liked to have included pictures, but your not going to see anything but a red, swollen eye.
After i noticed that i have pieces of aluminium stuck in the plastic eyeglasses of my gasmask (combination safety glasses, face protection and air filter), i am allways VERY careful wearing it... I use some 1/8" carbide end mills for trimming edges, and they spray small sharp pieces of metal everywhere.
yea, I usually use the same goggles I use when I play airsoft so I know there good (Bolle t800), but because they strap on my face, instead of sliding on, I choose, stupidly not to put em on...lol. Always wear them guys! (And I'm glad to be here at Bit-tech!)
I like the full face polycarbonate shields. When working with an abrasive wheel I cover the shield with cling-wrap foil, so hot metal pieces don't dig into the surface of the shield. The cling-wrap is replaced every few hours of use so the shield stays clear.
just be happy it was alu not steel. as steel will rust almost instantly with all the blinkig and salt water tears.
Actually it turns out I got a piece of the cutting disk, and a piece of aluminum...so the doctor has to grind away all the, what looked like rust, away from the one....it sucks too because it hurts more than the crap being stuck in your eye!!! Oh, and just because I never want to do that again, I went to Home Depot and got a good pair on Anzi z87+ rated glasses that slide on. I prefer my Bolle's but these will do rather nicely as well! Good news is that my vision is coming back, and I can atleast read, but not enough to con't on the project yet...sooo I guess it will wait until I can see to finish my Bondo work, and the most difficult...etching Plexi
i'm glad the hear that you are starting to get your vision back. it wont be long till you get that thing done now.
Scratched my eye, not modding by wearing contactlenses at work (a very dusty woodshop for children, where i'am i teacher) Got a bit drunk the night before i went to the doctor. So instead of a bit reddish eye i had busted some bloodvessels... Used to work at a webprogrammer before and never had any trouble with the lenses but the wooddust made them work like sandpaper on my eye. The docktor laughed "Ha! Your eyesurface looks like the moon!" Hurt "a bit" and it took a few months before i could use lenses again. Cost? < $100, most medical care in sweden is free.
ewwwwwww... thats friggin nasty dude!! hope ya recover, actually I hope nyone who saw that pis recovers from thier nausea
My eye looked like that when some kid smacked me with a big brach.. can tell you that it hurts worse than getting a 19" monitor on your foot.. (belive me, a mate dropped one on my foot, it wasnt pleasant..)
It has healed now, it was två years ago. The picture is really nasty, i use it to scare my students when they refuse to wear eyprotection It works very well. And i'am sure everyone here will be more carefull in the future...
