Ok, so I'm installing vanilla ubuntu on my system.

    Specs - Skt 939 3700+, 6800GS, 1GB PNY DDR400, Abit AN8-32X Nforce 4 mobo.

I have two issues going on.

1 - When I boot from the liveCD, everything in ubuntu works fine apart from a little graphics glitch on the bottom right corner. EXCEPT, theres no mouse pointer. The mouse functions normally, but I have to navigate using drag boxes on the desktop, and turning on the locate mouse feature.

2 - The big problem. I can install ubuntu perfectly fine, but when I try and shut down to reboot, it wont. It does the orange bar that goes from all orange to just a tiny bit orange and mostly black, then it ejects the disc, and asks me to 'Remove the disc, close the disc tray and press enter'.

When I do that, I can't get it to do anything else from that point on and I'm forced to turn the machine off manually. I can open some sort of actions log by hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL, but after trying a whole assortment of random shortcuts, thats all I can do. Also, I noticed that when it opens the actions log it has a message that appears whenever I hit it again, something along the lines of 'Message from #root <unknown>, then a new item on the list and tells me I've pressed ctrl alt del.

I'm thinking this might be why I can't install ubuntu? Every time I've tried its just booted straight into windows on the next boot, with no sign of ubuntu anywhere.

Edit: I forgot to mention. When I say can't do anything, I mean from the moment that message comes up. It won't even register the enter key.

Could be a dodgy burn. Did you verify the disc?

Yeah. I verified the iso on the machine before burning, and I've run the check utility on the disc itself before now. (The one at the boot prompt of the livecd where it checks itself.)

Did you try the alternative install CD? and what version are you using 32 or 64 bit? (To be honest, I never heard of vanilla Ubuntu...)

I love bit-tech, and have been posting here for years, but I always take my ubuntu question to www.ubuntuforums.org or the #ubuntu channel on freenode

Unfortunately I haven't had this issue with my systems. (They usually wouldn't boot the Live CD at all, and therefore I didn't install it, or it worked out of the box and I only had to tweak a few things to get stuff like wireless to work.)

Sorry I can't be of much help, but hopefully the install sub-forums over at the ubuntu forums will help. Good luck!

    Thanks, I'll do that.

Glider, when I say vanilla, I mean its not kubuntu, xubuntu, ubuntu studio, christian ubuntu, etc. Its just plain ol' ubuntu with no bells or whistles. And I'm using the 32 bit i386 livecd.

You could also try the 64bit version... 64bit tends to be a lot better on Linux then it's on Windows...

I'm downloading the 32 bit and 64 bit alternate install CDs right now, although I'm probably going to install 32 bit, because I want to use the apt to turn it into ubuntu studio, and for that it has to be 32 bit.

No mouse pointer sounds like x not setup correctly.
