    OK, something really weird is happening with my home network:

    I have a router/modem with my main PC hooked up via cat5 to the router and then my download PC, laptops, etc. using the WiFi link to the router.

    Everything was fine until last Wednesday night when I couldn't VNC onto my download PC from the main one. Then I noticed my laptops were getting errors when trying to connect to the network, but only every now & then. The download PC is still connected to the internet. I can ping it from the router no problems, but I can't connect to it with any other machine on the network. When I try pinging the download PC from the main PC I get about 3 out of 4 timeouts.

    I tried changing the WiFi channels in case there was some interference, but it's made no difference. I'm really baffled! :confused:

    After changing to Channel 4 my PowerBook refuses to connect to the network at all now, my ThinkPad does, but can't get to the internet.

    I figured it was a good time on Friday to upgrade the firmware on the router (as it's the D-Link G604T, the one with "issues"). It's fixed all the stuff I had problems with before, but this weird WiFi problem is still happening.

    Does anyone have any ideas on what is causing this, and any solutions (preferably not buying a new router as it was working fine before)??

    Thank you! :D

    First off, I'd tried all the channels and there isn't a "right one" because the wireless cards skip through until they find the channel.

    Secondly:
    It's that router.

    I've got it working at the moment by using channel 1 with WEP switched off (using MAC address filtering). No other channel would connect even when I turned the WEP off so I still think there's something weird going on. It's not such an urgent issue now though.

    Hmmm

    I'm not a guru at this either. But when we have problems at home. We just reset the router. And set up everything again, from scratch. Could be alot of work.. but it usually fixes the problem.

    Sometimes its easier to start over, then to find the actual problem.

    Good luck. Wifi can be something tricky. I remember when I helped my uncle setting up his wifi, he didn't have alot of reach. The problem was that in the 'line' of connection, there was a fireplace, and the metal construction probably intereferred with the connection. So we moved it a few feet passet the fireplace and voila.. worked perfect. He can now surf with his laptop all over his house and garden.

    Ah yeah, sorry, I should've pointed out that my first steps when I realised there was a problem was:

    1) Reset the AP;
    2) Reboot the router;
    3) Unplug the router for a couple of minutes;
    4) Reset the router to factory settings.

    This has been done a couple of times now as I updated the firmware while the network was down and you have to reset it all then too.

    The weird thing about all this, is it was working fine for months & nothing changed when it just stopped working. Because I could see the signal strength go up & down from 0% to about 89% on my laptops almost in waves makes me think it is some kind of interference on channel 6. I can't use channel 11 as another network close-by uses that channel. So far 1 without encryption seems to have fixed it.

    By reset, do you mean the little button on the back or the button in the web interface?

    You also said that you've updated the firmware on the router, have you tried updating the firmware on the access point?

    I have found that nothing just decides to break, there has to be something that started the problems ;)

    I reset it both from the web interface and the button at the back. More than once for each.

    The router is the AP, so yes.

    Well I quite agree, but I have a feeling that the thing that's caused this is beyond my control; i.e. some 2.4Ghz interference from a neighbour. Nothing in my house, on the router, on the PCs, etc. changed when it decided to stop working.

    maybe ur neighbour has a particularly strong microwave oven.....

    er.... thats he/she uses alot....

    it sounds as though u've tried everything so it must be some sort of interferance. here's a long shot... a new mobile mast near by?

    Time for a signal amp and a beefy antenna imo :D

    /me hands Hex a guide to "overclocking your wireless router for the non-dummie"

    Can you get close to the router and connect with your laptop?

    hehehe thanks :hehe:

    I do actually have it working at the moment. I got it on channel 1 with WEP disabled and it's connecting fine. Any other channels even with WEP disabled still didn't work though. It's weird, but then, my neighbours do have some weird stuff going on at their house. Ever since they moved in our TV reception has been awful and our FM radios started picking up the pilots talking on planes going overhead (I live under the flight-path for Heathrow & Gatwick). :eyebrow:

    dose your neighbour have satellites dish or any aerials that don’t look standard (pointing the wrong direction).

    ~137 (atp satellites), 139(pager), 145.x(enthusiast band), ~800(odd old satellites), ~1700 (HRTP satellites), 2400 (new set to be used)....
    from ~116mhz - ~175mhz is Plaines

    1700 or 800 - one could be responsible for the tv signal as they have a set frequencies that are doubled ....106>212>425>850>1700.

    It's hard to tell as we all have high fences and secluded gardens around here, I certainly can't see any kind of dish, but then there aren't any sat dishes visable in this area. I am so fed up with all the things that have happened since they moved in though, I'm tempted to just go have a nose around and see what it is they have going on in there!
