Networks wifi hotspots - what's the deal?

    I get the idea of wifi hotspots but i dont understand the incentive. Can you get free internet access at certain places? Do you have to pay for it? whats the deal?

    this is good, I'd like to make use of it :)

    You can get free internet access in some places but it costs money in others, depends on who's running the service.

    Incentive is to get people to spend time at your shop/cafe/aeroport or whatever so you get more custom.

    I pulled out my pda and connected in McDonalds at Skegness. The service they run though means you have to prepay for 'airtime' on the net, thru btopenworld.
