    Hi,
Am in the middle of setting up my new HTPC, and have come accross a bit of a problem.
I ahve a working wired and wireless network at home, which multiple wired and wireless machines use perfectly day in day out.

I have etup the htpc to stream music/video over the network WHICH WORKS FINE ON THE WIRED NETWORK.

I have just installed the PCI wifi adaptor and the network appears to be functioning, ie i can browse other PC's etc. However when i try to stream a file as before, it crashes Windows media player.
I know its not a bandwidth problem, it worked on another machine with the same card.

However what is confusing is that i can copy the media file across the network and play it from the HD fine.

Any ideas? Wifi card/snd card driver conflicts?

I did play around with win xp services, and disabled some which i didnt believe neccersary.....but i have tested it over wired with these settings and its fine.

    Any ideas??

When you say stream, do yoou mean using somehting like shoutcast, or are you just opening it from the other computer?
If you you are just opening it on the other computer, try a different media player and see if it still crashes, that might give us some clues.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply.
Sorry i hoped tht wouldnt cause a problem - i meant opening from another HD - no shoutcast or *actual* streaming involved.

maxing out your wireless bandwidth maybe? i wouldnt think you would but you never know, get a bad link quality and you never know.

and if the HTPC is going to sit in one spot why use the wireless?

Nah its not maxing out signal, its got good strength and link quality.

I didnt want to wire the bottom floor of the house but think i might have to.
Will give me extra bandwidth but just got the hassle of putting iit in.

    understandable.

does the system containing the files have DMA for the HDD enabled?

are there other progreams access its harddrive at the same time, might cause it to "stutter"?

have you used air sanitizer to kill nasty bandwidth blocking air born bacteria? (ok that last one isnt a real suggestion but it sprang into my head and i couldnt help it)
