I need decent WiFi signal strength / quality, and I need it now. I've been through a range of USB WiFi adapters. One or two have worked better than others. But none have wowed me. What do you use? Any recommendations on what to buy are welcome. I don't want to be paying lots of money for a WiFi adapter. £20 seems fair, and I'll stretch to £30 (£40 if it's REALLY worth it). I currently have a WiFi signal of 2 bars (out of 5), and I'm only across the hall (4 or 5 metres?) from the router....
It all depends on what the walls are made of not how close you are to the router you are. To concrete wall is quite an obstruction. It might be worth moving the router and possibly changing channels to get a better signal first before you go shopping. As for adapters I've alway gone for Belkin, never had any probs with them.
I'm assuming the walls are probably concrete. The thing is, I'm currently living with my girlfriend at her parents. Her dad isn't likely to want to move the router, as he has his computer connected to it via a network cable. Same with changing channels. I doubt he'll want to do much fiddling because at the moment it works just fine... for him... We'll see though. I'll take a quick look at belkin adapters now.
I've heard very mixed reviews. Some singing a PCI card's praises, another shaming it to the end of the earth. I just don't know what to do... aha Could you recommend a specific card?
Hehe, maybe not... but I'm sure he'd notice if I asked for the login details for the router settings page...
My brother has great success with this: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/edimax-ew-7711in-150mbps-wireless-80211b-g-n-32-bit-pci-adapter
Agreed, I always scan the area and pick a channel thats not being used when I'm sorting routers out for people. the difference can some time be amazing. So it's worth agao and it won't affect any one in any way.
Good luck http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11383/~/what-is-the-password-for-my-bt-home-hub-%3F
I use a TL-WN951N, which is PCI, in a house which has walls that are wider than I am. I used a magmount wifi antenna which is placed on top of the case, which increases the signal greatly. I think the card was about £30, which I was willing to pay if it fixed my wifi problems. Try getting your antenna out (ON THE COMPUTER!) in the clear and then if that still doesn't work try using a gain antenna. Edit: The walls in my house are solid Granite. Ultimate signal killer! Already tried I've tried every 'default' login I can think of. To be honest, it'd cheap enough that I might as well try it whether it's guaranteed to work or not. Having the aerial away from the PC might help as well actually, so I'll almost definitely be ordering this.
That looks like a seriously good piece of kit. Lots of places appear to be doing it for £20 to 25, so I think I'll be purchasing this. play.com have it for £17.99. It looks... Quality? I don't know why, haha. But I'm just convinced it'll work.
If that doesn't work, then there are serious problems with temporal wormholes! The build qualiy is good, the one I have get my engineering seal of approval. Hope this helps Enterobsidian
