I've got a friend who needs a bit of help. Basically his eMac is broken, and it would seem to be a software problem, from how he has described it. However he doesn't have the original install disks for the copmuter. I've got some install disks from my iBook to install OS X on that. What I want to know is will these disks work on a slightly older eMac? I think he said he was running 10.1, so I presume the eMac is about 3-4 years old. Basically is there a minimum spec for Tiger, and is there any copy-restriction that stops me putting an iBook version of Tiger on an eMac? This is all legal by the way, I'm no longer using the iBook version of OS X.

Any ideas? PS I have no idea on the spec of the eMac, I'll try and get it off him :) Will he need to have a DVD drive?

the discs that came with your ibook and your powerbook will not work on his emac, i tried it on an old imac and it knows what model the disc was made for.

Yeah, by iBook DVD wont let me install OS X on my PowerMac. Although I can boot from it to recover my system, that might be of help?

The disks that came with my old G4 iMac worked on my old iBook too (OS9+10.1) but since then the disks that come with a system have bee locked to that model.

The boxed macos has no such restriction though :)

Any OSX disc will work in any osx compatible mac. the only ones that wont work in another mac are the 10.2 and 10.3 G5 discs.

i used the discs from my old emac to install panther onto my old DV imac and on my friends 500mhz ibook....

Your the exception to the rule then :p

Although, the eMac was aimed at the educational market, so the older ones could have a different scheme with the OS installer
