I have a couple year old PSU sitting next to me. I was wonder if I could use it to power my new system instead of buying a whole new one? OK here goes: PSU: 250w ATX mobo molex 4 regular molex 1 FDD molex PC: Soyo Dragon Ultra XP2000+ Triplex Silver GeForce 4 Ti4600 120 GB 7200 RPM WD Lite ON CDRW Floppy drive (gotta be able to do school work) MO GLK12232-25 SM Three Cold Cathodes
Maybe. But I doubt it. Athlons are power hungry beasts! Not to mention everything else you got there. You definitely don't want to under-power your system.
most people i know say you need at least a 300w for an athlon and all the gubins to be stable, but nothing is ever certain.
hmmmm ok the case im buying comes with a 320w anyways.i was just wondering if i could live without the 320 and get the case 30 bucks cheaper
True dat! I say go for the biggest QUALITY psu you can afford. If you get 600 Watt P.O.S....it's not gonna do you any good. The 350 Watt and 430 Watt Enermaxs seem to be very good. But there are a lot of other solid performing, cheaper PSUs. Check out pricewatch.com. And make sure that you look at the AMD site and get a power supply that AMD recommends. [EDIT] Just saw your post Morphine. Be careful with the PSU that comes in a case. I built out a machine with one that the supplier swore was AMD compatible. The box wouldn't boot because the PSU voltage wasn't stable enough.
hhmmmm its a brand i never heard of before.... hmmm ill try it and if not, well there is a lil mom and pop place in town that sells enermaxes for cheap
There would be no harm in trying the 250w. I have run an XP1800 system with 4 hard drives on a 150w mATX supply with no ill effects whatsoever. It all depends on the quality of the unit IMO.
You say you have a couple of PSU's? Use both. Use one for just powering the mobo stuff and the other for the HDD and all that.
but its just a regular sized tower tower case... heres a pic of the inside maybe putting the second PSU in that thing under the 3 1/2 drives?
Um... Tough one. How much room u got brtween the PSU and the 5 1/4 bays. May be u could mount one vertically. It's best not to have the PSU fan expelling in to the system. Maybe best to get a 300w + PSU.
make sure its AMD approved if you care about the long term life of your cpu.... apart from that a decent 300W should be more then enough...
Umm my athlon 1 ghz runs fine with a 235w PSU a gf4 mx 440 and 3 PCI cards...produces a ungodly smell though...
It's a premodded.... Simply becuase my dad dropped the dremel down the basement stairs and its now in bout 500,000 pieces! Found this lil gem at www.directron.com look under aluminum cases. It's $79, comes with a window, clear blue fan, 60mm back fan, 320w PSU, and your choice of lighting.
