My build consists of the following : Intel Core 2 Duo e6550 2.33ghz 2 gb ddr2 OCZ reaper memory Generic ecs motherboard 9600gt (just ordered an evga 1gb gddr5 gtx 460) 500gb harddrive 500 watt ocz PowerSupply I have a feeling there probably will be some bottlenecks but I'm hoping that it's nothing to severe. What do you guys think?
I would say don't worry about bottle necks, just try to get the best out of what you have..Add some more RAM and maybe a bit of overlcocking.
Mobo could be a problem! As far as I am aware ecs never got a fantastic write up. Look at an Asus, gigabyte or biostar board with a p45 chipset. Don't have an old cpc mag to hand to double check! Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Thanks for the replies guys. I'm definitely going to mainly be using this computer for gaming. I'm kind of on a $200 dollar budget at the moment and the gtx 460 took a good chunk of that off. Are there any decent mobo's out there for $50-75 i should be looking for?
To start, naw there won't really be bottlenecks but upgrading RAM will be nice but I reccommend this mobo http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0342512 it may be 5$ over what you said but thats what I have with AMD Athlon Quad Core 3.0ghz (overclocked to 3.6) and a gtx 460 and 4gigs of RAM but you should get that Mobo because it supports DDR3 RAM and is all round good,
In general it won't...but in some games that are more CPU demanding than in general, overclocking your CPU might help improve your frame rate a bit. But not really sure if you motherboard's up to it...
My motherboard wont even give me the option to overclock. I can barely access the bios. @Karas Sounds like a pretty decent deal but my current chip is an intel and I definitely don't have enough money at the moment to upgrade both the mobo and cpu at the same time.

The CPU is fine, it just needs to be pushed from its 333 bus to 400 and you'll have a 2.8GHz chip What's your CPU heatsink though? If it's not great, then you maybe just better off dropping in 2GB more memory and living with the ECS if your budget is that tight.
got things open box off newegg.. was fine don't really care how they send harddrives though.. they wrap it up in bubble wrap and it flys around loose in a cardboard box.. they work but that can't be good- one ace ventura and it's over tigerdirect will just send you faulty gear though.. got doa from them, after a rebate scandal I had where they wouldn't honor a mistake on their site- don't use them at all.. newegg, zipzoomfly, petras tech shop, amazon, svc.com << awesome service.. every order comes in 2 days later- it's like they have a guy who's packaging it up as he sees you lurking the site
yes there will be a bottleneck... I'm not sure why everyone says no I just switched from a Phenom II X4 965 @3.8Ghz to a (still stock) i7 950 @ 3.06 and it's day and night in black ops, tf2 and bad company even though I still use my 260. Yes, I know, it's hard to believe... but the framerate doesn't lie ! Obviously it doesn't mean the bottleneck will make it impossible for you to play games. The 460 will still be an incredible upgrade and is really worth it but it definitely won't be used at 100%
That's because it's depending on the graphic card used as well. His 9600GT is probably only around half your GTX260's speed, so unlike you he is less likely (I'm not saying it won't) to get significant bottleneck. The few games you mentioned are relatively CPU bounded/dependent, but for most average games, his E6550 is not gonna bottleneck his slow 9600GT much. Edit: Ah...just noticed the part he's upgrading the graphic to GTX460 1GB...then yes, his current CPU would definitely bottleneck the GTX460 1GB. Really don't think it's such a good idea to pair a GTX460 1GB with his current system (since it is rather slow), as because of the CPU bottleneck, the GTX460 1GB would probably run at not faster than a GTS250/5770 level speed....
I say if his budget is limiting him, then upgrade the motherboard. He has enough memory for now until he gets more money. Get the mobo, then oc the processor and memory as far as you can, but keep an eye on your temps. Not sure what cooler you're using. I'm assuming stock cooler. This should help with your framerate a little bit
