Right, I'm having real issues with the USB modem that Tiscali have sent. In short it's a piece of crap. Anyway, when I get an ethernet modem, or an ADSL modem/router combo, I'll be fine.

However, until then, will this work?

How would I go about setting it up? And will I need crossover cables anywhere? Thank you.

The router is a fairly old netgear router, but it should work, right? And the PC is a wee shuttle running XP MCE.

Um, well, it's possible. I assume that you tried modem -> router -> comp and couldn't get it to work. I'm also assuming that you have dual NICs on your PC. It's going to require setting some things up in windows on the PC, but I don't think you should need a crossover cable.

he said it's a USB modem so it conect ot the PC via USB not Cat 5

    however::

    It should work.
in the network conections window of the shuttle bridge the eathernet port and the USB modem conection to the internet..

connect the eathernet port on the shuttl to the wan on the router and you should be golden.

however if you have a wifi pci card you can put in the shuttle you can elimate the router all together and just bridge the wifi card and the USB.

It will surely work. Like woodshop said, just bridge the networks (USB and ethernet) in the config screen (select both => right click => bridge).
However, DON'T put the Cat5 cable from the PC in the WAN port of the router... put it in a regular LAN port. Common mistake, and hard to find yourself. No crossover cables needed, they are only required for PC - PC connections.

    Hope That Helps

I have a WiFi PCI card in another computer (which I can't really remove, but I'll try it I can't get the simple way working), and a PCI LAN card in the shuttle (the onboard one has died, so I only have 1 LAN port).

What do I need to put as default gateways etc?

It can't be that hard to get it the simple way working...

Check in the config screen, under software => windows thingy's... that IIS is active.

Reboot, and connect through the USB modem. Then go to network config, and bridge the USB connection and the LAN. This way your PC will act like a router, and therefor you need your netgear to act like a switch (by not using the WAN port, but a LAN port instead). So no need to set the netgear, just plug into the LAN ports.

If you put in the wireless card, it will be harder, still need to bridge the connections, but you have to set the wireless nic to ad-hoc mode to work...

Well, for some reason, this damn modem puts itself as a dial-up thing. So I can't bridge the connections, it won't let me. I can do ICS though, but I'm not sure that will work. Anyway, it would seem that I have a bigger problem in that my PC's NIC has stopped working. Argh!

No, I don't think you can. However, I don't think that my network is playing ball because now I can't even get into the router from this PC, though it works fine from my laptop. So at the moment I'm assuming my other NIC shagged itself.

So I am taking my ball and going home, I'm giving up.

That's NOT the spirit... You should take out the Dremel, or hammer ;)

If it was my modem, I'd have destroyed it by now, but this network isn't for my house.

The modem crashed my Mac 3 times. Just completely froze up and had to reset. That's never happened before, and it certainly WAS the modem's fault.

At least I have access to the intarnets, even if not from my bed wirelessly :(

I would purchase just a good old adsl router and ditch the usb dial-up adsl.

Just call the telco and tell them you need a modem with a lan out port, since your computer "doesn't" have any USB ports. :) I don't see any real need to buy anything, though it's an option. Of course if your ISP is anything like mine, you'll wait three hours on hold only to find out that you didn't even need to call them, just stop by their office and they'll swap it no questions asked. All that effort to convince them that the thing was on its way out only to find out that it was completely unnecessary. [/moan]
