    i have a question.

    whats
    Tulatin support ??

Heres the board im getting HERE
Heres the CPU im thinking of getting HERE

It says i must have FC-PGA not FC-PGA2 so i made sure of that. Will these two work together ??

Am i likely to experience any probs underclocking the 1ghz to something about 550Mhz?

it'll work, but you won't be utilizing full potential of the chip...... that board supports celeron processors with 66MHz FSB.. that one's a 100MHz FSB... i think you want non-coppermine but its been a while since I've bought intel

probably low temps and thus a quieter HSF...speaking of which, can underclocking damage your processor too?

Im underclocking to yes have a much cooler cpu, thus having a very small HS and maybe a fan but only a small quiet one.

If you want cool running, just buy a Via C3 CPU, rather than spending more on an intel, and underclocking it to get less performance than the VIA, while still putting out more heat.

From what I've read 'Internet News' in the forums, on the new VIA C3 Processor, it can run fine without a heatsink.

That's how cool it runs, and it performed adequately in quake and the like.

Although, a PIII underclocked, if done right, (ie. 1GHz to say 800Mhz) could definitely yield better performance than the VIA and would be cool enough to run with a large heatsink and quiet fan or no fan at all.

(I've run a PIII 800@600 for about a year now, running between 25-30C at full load and a large HS with two small quiet fans no problems).

    Another point to make...

FCPGA2 motherboards can use FCPGA chips

FCPGA motherboards can not use FCPGA2 chips

That particular board sells as a bundle with VIA C3 processor's from VIA.

Any VIA FC-PGA or S370 will fit on that mboard. Don't know whether VIA make an FC-PGA2, but the ones at dabs that you listed should all work fine.

I must apologise, that particular shuttle board does not sell as a bundle. After doing a little digging, and reading this month's PC Pro I've found that the board in question is very similar to the shuttle one but is an integrated CPU and Mainboard called the 'VIA Eden'.

It is a mainboard much like the Shuttle one you're looking at with near identical features and layout http://www.via.com.tw/en/images/eden/Eden1500.jpg, but with an integrated VIA processor which runs at 533mhz (in the Eden 1500) and upwards.

look at http://www.via.com.tw/en/Products/edenfaq.jsp for more info on this. It's around £85 ex VAT according to the magazine review I've got in front of me.

Official and only distributor for this at the moment is mentioned here: http://www.pcpowerzone.co.uk/.

Who give Simon Shepherd at simons@rapid-ltd.co.uk as a contact for C3 processor's, Eden systems and mainboards for the C3, as well as more info than I can provide.

    Hope that covers it!

    You're just short-sighted mate.... ;)

On a hunch, try www.rapid-ltd.co.uk for it. :D The link at pcpowerzone says specifically to email that bloke for info on buying etc. You should find a contact number at rapid-ltd too.

Good luck with it, and pay more attention to putting it together than you do to my posts!! :hehe:

Dabs also sell the C3 I believe. The Shuttle motherboards and cases are available from kustom.

Under-clocking only works out cooler than getting a slower cpu if you can lower the core voltage. Not guaranteed.
