Neat.. Running Rufus to make an installer earlier, and as soon as I started, Windows said there is a problem with the usb device and windows must shut down.... for a usb stick? SHUUUURE. I get the cutest 'errors.'

ESU now free for all in the EEA area and the UK has been included by the looks of it. This was due to EU pressure on MS (the EEA stuff that is)

    Lots of letters there.

Means my OH's laptop doesn't need to be linuxfied just yet.

Yeah I heard about this going free … not telling my other half or stepson - neither of whom wanted the move to 11 I pushed them to have under pain of losing internet access, before the ESU was made free. In fairness I didn’t want the “up”grade either, but agreed to go first. And now I have the CachyOS installer on an external drive waiting for me to have time to switch!

Just gives me a bit more time to sort it all out for her.

My backup is going Mint. Straightforward Ubuntu just wound me the hell up, be it layout or whatever. Mint, everything just worked from my Bluetooth WiFi dongle or the BT keyboard. My OH will get that eventually too.

Gaming pc. Well, I may extend just for now as I'm still in the depths of a modded cyberpunk but that will be Bazzite afterwards before I get lost in my next game.

W11, no, not for me. The recall spyware just leaves me feeling icky. I know you can workaround but I may as well just switch tbh.

I wondered why I'd got the extension for free.

I think my main rig has fallen foul of the windows update that breaks SSDs with certain controllers. My previously just fine 2TB m.2 drive is suddenly gone after I relented and let windows run a bunch of updates. I know, I know. But, FAAAAARK!!

    Bugger.

Crosses fingers that mine has been ok so far. My other rig the nvme was added later so Linux is on that and windows is on an SSD still.

    Main rig, hopefully, has survived.

Don't expect them to fix that any time soon. 10 still randomly bricks usb sticks on me, (It got one this week...) Fortunately, I have access to an XP machine that can repair them. :duh:

Based on what I’ve read, the cause of the bricking is a dodgy beta controller firmware update from Phison.

Nope. I haven't updated the SSD firmware and I don't use Beta releases.

Is anyone who signed up for ESU getting the 'Your device is no longer receiving security updates' message in Windows Updates?

Better question: Have they blocked manual updates yet? I would/will go that route to dodge their horsesh-t.

Is this the latest update that has the Handheld gaming mode? I'd like to try that, although my handhelds have plenty of RAM reducing resource use when playing a game is never a bad thing, particularly like it switchable as when not gaming it is my main machine where I don't what stripped down stuff and want to load all the things.

EDIT - the answer is yes if you have the ally xbox but otherwise on normal machines it another dodgy workaround :duh:

Enable Xbox Full Screen Experience on ANY standard PC on Windows 11 25H2 - Pureinfotech

My system have just updated and the unsupported message has gone. slmgr /dlv is telling me I have 3 years ESU with a year 6 addon so looking good.
