Hey. I'm new, I usually know what I am doing but I am kind of in a bind here, so I could really use some advice. Thanks in advance. Alrite here's the problem, it is my friends computers so I am not too sure of the specs. When she goes to boot it up the Win XP boot screen shows and the bar at the bottom just keeps on going, it doesn't stop. I have tried booting into Safe Mode and using the option "last known good configuration" but it still does not work. Formatting is not an option becuase there is a lot of data not backed up. Also while booting into safe mode the last file it stops at is "agp440.sys". Thanks for your help.

agp440.sys is going to be related to the graphics card in the PC - see Linky

Basically the solution in the link disables the bad driver you have installed for the graphics card and replaces it with a default driver - you can then install a new driver after windows boots up.

    Hope this helps

Well, that does help but the problem is that she does not have the cd. I found that I can download boot disks to work with the system. My question is, will it put me into some sort of cycle or will it just re-install the core drivers and have the system boot. Thanks.

The solution in the link will install basic drivers so that you can boot into windows, after you have got into windows you can install different drivers - are the drivers you installed the latest ones for the card? If they are then try using an older driver that is known to work

No no, I understand that in the link, but she does not have the Windows XP cd required to get into the recovery console. I do, but I am in NY and she is in Boston. I know she can find a local computer at a library to donwload the win xp boot disks but not for her to download a cd image of winxp. Will the windows xp boot disk do the same thing? Thanks.

the recovery diskette will only work if recovery console is installed already afaik ...

always insist on a proper os cd if you pay for the os. "recovery disks" and ghost images just dont cut it, and should be considered theft. the sad part is, the largest and generally most respected oems use them.
