Hi there, i have just done a clean install of win xp sp2 on my dads laptop and am now looking for something like McAfee Total Protection/Norton 360.
    Laptop specifications
    - Intel Pentium M Processor 1.60GHz
    - 590MHz , 504MB RAM
    - 30.2GB HD
& as it is now 5yrs old the two mentioned products are over kill & would make it run at a snails pace, all he wants to do is word & browse the web.
So is there any thing thats any good & isn't a system hog?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure that, the computer has SP3 on please. SP2 is no longer supported by Microsoft, hence no more updates. You can do this, by visiting Windows Update. Make sure that once it's done, that there are no longer any additional post-SP3 updates.

Microsoft Security Essential, as mentioned, is the best solution for you. It provides spyware, malware and virus (including trojan, and worms) protection. It's very very light, you don't feel it running, and has a very easy to use interface. In addition, it doesn't pop-up an annoy you when nothing is of concern (ie: nothing detected).

For future reference and for yourself, Security Essential is also available in 64-bit, allowing to provide a bit more performance during the scanning (it's mostly limited by your HDD speed).

You will be set with Microsoft Windows Firewall and MSE.

Avast is an alternative to MSE, it's a question of preference. If you don't like MSE, try Avast, else try AVG.
