How well does win XP's bootloader recognize linux, or how do you get it to? Should I just install lilo and be done with it instead?

Using XPs boot-loader can sometimes be very easy and sometimes a complete pain. Using google or searching linux HOW-TOs will turn up 1000s of guides...

My main OS has always been WinXP so I load linux off XP, though as I'm using linux more and about to upgrade my system I'm considering reversing this.

    got XP home or pro?

don't know if home has that but here's how to deal with the boot loader under XP pro

    hit windows & break/advance/startup and recovery settings/edit.

you should have something like that:

now, multi(0) represent ide channel scsi(0) for scsi setup. Disk(0) represents the primary disk, rdisk(0) is the primary ide and rdisk1 would be the sencondary ide, and partition(0) is the first partition.

so if you got linux on the 4th partition on the primary disk, on ide0, then it would give something like that
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\LINUX="Linux Red hat 8.0" /fastdetect

    so under that
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
you put your linux os line and it should work;)

    hope it helps ;)

Not quite that easy I'm afraid, Linux can't load off XP bootloader. The usual way (which will be described in many of the guides and HOW-TOs) involves installing Linux and choosing not to install the boot information to the MBR but to the boot partition instead. Then you get the first part of this drive in an image file and copy this to your XP system disk and point boot.ini toward this, e.g.

    C:\rhlinux9.img="Redhat Linux 9.0"

This is just off the top of my head but is the main outline of the guide you should be looking for, usually called 'win9x+NT-HOWTO' or something along those lines.

Tru, although I prefer GRUB. Alternatively you could use bootmagic or some other app with a nice gui...

Konqueror is alright, but I get the feeling not much work has been done on it in quite some time...
