Hi all, I am having endless problems with win7 that was working OK a few days ago. Firstly is became so slow that it was ridiculous but still worked. Now it will boot but sometimes stops at the welcome screen saying please wait. If I do get to the win7 screen nothing will work when I click on it just the blue circle appears going round but never gets anywhere, sometimes if I move the cursor to the start orb then that is the end nothing happens and can't even move it anymore.. I have tried everything I can think of, system restore which failed a few times but I managed to get it back to an early time which still did not work nor can I undo it now, I can get into safe mode, tried last known good fig but no joy, tried reseating the mem cards. When I could get to task manager CPU was showing 100% all the time but that may be misleading. I have a Paragon backup on external HDD but can't access it. I am using the same PC now to post this but using XP on another drive, can anyone help please as I can't think of anything else other than factory restore which I really don't wan't to have to do.
Honestly I would save anything I could of importance and wipe the computer. It sounds like malware or a virus. But it is the only defiantly way to fix the problem since it seems to be a software issue
Have you tried booting it into safe mode without networking and trying something like a system restore or a virus check to see if a virus is making trouble?
Tried everything that I can think of including trying to clone it from a backup drive but no joy. It now won't boot at all NTLDR missing. I do have all important stuff backed up on 2 different drives, just did not wan't all the bother of a clean instal. HDD failure is the only thing I can think of unless anyone has any more ideas. Thanks for suggestions.
Only other thing I can think of really is catastrophic Windows update failure. I would run the hdd manufactures diagnostic utility. If the disk checks as good reinstall win7.
It was updating or not updating all the time, saying it was updating then stopping so I could only do a cold boot, this went on for hours.
That was what I was thinking but some other points have now been raised. I don't want to scrap a fairly new drive about 18mnths old if the problem is something else. Thanks for your response.
I'd do the following: Visrus/malware scan Check HDD run - sfc /scannow [in command prompt, as administrator] if that fails [says it found problems and fixed them says it can't be repaired], or even if it doesn't run run - dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth [again elevated command prompt] if all else fails - bin it [the win7 install] and start over... EDIT: both of those commands [with slightly different options] can also be done from the windows disk, but I can't remember off the top of my head what the commands are...
Hi again, been having another go at it but no luck. I can't get past the NTLDR message booting from HDD. Can boot from the CD to Recovery Options OK. Startup repair says it cannot automatically repair. System restore gives error messages (0x80070067) or (0x80070002). Also ran chkdsk but it failed to save the log. New cable just in case. I can start up fine on the same PC using the other XP drive and I can see and read files on the Win7 disk. If I start new install from the CD will I get the Repair option as I do with XP ie it starts as if doing install but you have the option of pressing R to repair without losing all your programs.
from the windows 7 USB/CD you should be able to open a command prompt try Code: sfc /scannow /offbootdir=x:\ /offwindir=x:\windows where 'x' is the drive 7 is on [it may vary what your drive is picked up as]
Thanks to all for trying to help but I give up now and will go for the new install as nothing else seems to work.
Posted 4 minutes ago at 10:50PM This is getting beyond my comprehension now. I tried to do a clean install from the DVD and got 2 options Upgrade or Custom, warning says custom will lose all your data so I tried update. It told me to remove the disk and start windows normally in order to proceed. I tried that thinking no way I could do it, then it brought up Win7 which I am using now to post this. Got it back and running but don't know what to do next. I don't want to shut it down in case it never works again totally confused now.
I have finally managed to recover this from an external backup drive which did not want to co-operate earlier. Thanks to all for your help and advice. Oz
