hi, im looking for the cheapest easiest way to make a remote control for a pc to control winamp, i will probably be using a sony remote as i am going to put a pc in a sony cd player case to run mp3's. i have already built some of these, i have one running in my mothers car but im making one for my hifi rack so i cant use a wired remote
theres a thread in the sales forum about a dude whos making an IR sensor and will be selling them...talk to him, might get that to work....
This is the easiest ... ... But it will cost you £30. Apparently it is directly compatible with sony remotes, and has a winamp plugin! IRMAN
If you know enough about how the CD player's remote works, you could maybe connect the reciever circuit to one of the PC's COM ports (with the right circuitry) and use this Winamp plugin. The plugin comes with details on how to connect a set of buttons to the COM port to act as a remote, so I'm assuming that it'd be adaptable for this. The downside is that you can only have a maximum of 8 buttons, so chances are you won't be able to use all of your remote's buttons - it can do 16 commands depending on whether you double click etc (I think the plugin lets you set it) so if you wanted you could make a circuit where one button produced a single 'click' and another one produces a double 'click' as if the first button had been pressed twice, so you could have up to 16 buttons. BTW, I've never used this plugin, so I don't know if this is possible or not, but it seems like it might work
Is Packard Bell even in business? I have an old Packard Bell in my dad's office, its about 6 years old, I remeber bringing it from the store to the office and setting it up. It also had the same remote and reciever listed in the last post. From what I can remeber, the remote NEVER worked. Even after I realized it needed batteries (gimme a break, I was 10) it still didn't work, but no one in the office cared, so it now sits in the top draw of the desk that the computer is on. I had a problem with the computer about a year ago and tried to contact Packard Bell, but I couldn't find any support, making me think they are out of business.
to my knowledge they are in business, but like most big companies they dont look at such small problems...
If you want to build your own, start at the WinLIRC Homepage and follow up some of the links (Girder looks good). The HeatSeekerz Remote Control how-to is basically the same circuit as WinLIRCs, and uses their software. You can train a spare remote to run any Win commands inc WinAmp.
thanks for all the replys, im going to get one off the bloke on the sales forum who is making & selling them when i get a bit more cash in my account (me is poor, all dontations needed, please give to the poor young & unable to get drunk fund )
tell you what, as i will be sending off the cash to him on monday, wait until i get mone & i will tell you how well it works, how about that (ps i am the sole owner & beneficer of the poor unemployed single & cant afford to buy alcohol teenager fund so i keeps it all to myself, the main donators unfortunatly are only my mum & dad )
