so I have a very low spec mini-itx system running Linux mint (some old version) on my home network.
I use it for personal local file sharing, never been open to the WAN.

been accessing it for many years from both my laptop and tower using samba file sharing protocol

today though. my tower running windows 10 is refusing to access the server, but my laptop running windows 8.1 accesses it perfectly fine.

the server is only a 1ghz embedded VIA CPU and 1gb old spec RAM (DDR2 I think)

so how can I get my tower to access it again.

I have upgraded my router, so it now has eSATA ports and USB ports.
maybe host the drives using them.
what adaptors do I need Inc power. for my SATA drives
I think this would be the way to go as access should be quicker than my server.

    [edit]
there seems to be an entry for samba in
programs and features > turn windows features on or off

just checked them and a reboot should work

SMB v1 is a compromised protocol, the big NHS hack was due to a vulnerability in CIFS/SMB.
Although your share is local only and 'shouldn't' be a risk I believe Microsoft has phased out default support for SMB v1 on any networked device.

    This may help you https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...0-v-1803/86a4dfe6-4531-4361-b0c2-d1c43319cd2e

I'm afraid I've not come up against any SMB1 since the lock down so I can't tell you if that'll definitely work or not.

    Best of luck

Newer version versions of 10 disable SMBv1 by dafualt because it's a security hole ridden mess.

IIRC you need to tweak things at the linux end to get it to work.

    EDIT: Try this

found out I can re-install support for SMB 1
programs and features > turn windows features on or off
it works... for now, till Microsoft totally kill it off.

so will need to get a proper solution rather than the re-install.

I think retiring the server and using the ports on my router to connect is the best way.
just need adaptors to connect the drives.

SATA drives to USB or eSATA ports
what adaptors should I be looking at?
