    Hi All,

Firstly apologies for any spelling errors I've never been great with spelling.

I been struggling with this all week. I've needed to reinstall Windows 7 64bit after some issues but after 21 hours and it just getting to 80% i got annoyed and turned it off.

I got into this situation by installing Ubuntu on a separate HDD, it somehow managed to destroy the MBR on my windows drive (note it wasn't a partition it was a totally separate drive). When i tried to fix the MBR with a 2 windows cd's and they didn't work properly (they where painfully slow) i used a couple of other MBR utilities. I did more harm then good so i decided to format the drive and start again. Which is where i ran into the issue of the install taking an age.

    So far I have:

*Tried 2 different SATA and 2 IDE DVD Drives
*Checked various bios and ensuring its set to ACHI, and disabling floppy drives
*Moved my hdd to SATA0 port
*Removed all non-essential parts (All of my extra HDD's and CD/DVD drives im not using, 3 sticks of RAM, My Sound Card, Network Card, Extra USB Port Card, and replaced my video card with a couple of different very low spec ones)
*Installing to 3 Different HDD's. (2 SATA, and an IDE)
*Installing using 2 Retail and 3 Burned Disks

I'm about to try using my mates PC to do the install. Failing that I'll just leave it as long as it takes to install. Prior to doing that though i'd like to see if anyone here has come across something like this or has any opinions.

Below is the relevant spec I'm currently running (when i have all of my parts in).

    Processor: Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9650 @ 3.00GHz
    Memory: 8192MB PC2-5300 RAM
Hard Drive: SATA 1TB - Hitachi
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
Sound Card: Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
Operating System: Windows 7 Home 64Bit (hopefully)
    Motherboard: ASRock 4Core1333-Viiv
PSU: Storm 800W Sient (model No LPG19-43)

Hope that was enough detail for you guys

    Thanks

    Pubkrooz

On my Asus P6T installing Vista or Win7 always takes an age, I had to leave it a few hours (Not 20!) to get it to work. Never worried too much about it though as I won't need to re-install for a fair while.

Have you tried it without the sound card ? I seem to remember that they can give problems.

Yes Bumsrush as i said in my post I've removed all unessential parts including the sound card.

All that's in at the minute are my PSU, Motherboard, CPU, an IDE DVD Drive and my 1TB Hard Drive, and a low end video card.

I'm tempted to install ubuntu as a host and run a virtual win 7 machine it doesn't seem to get the same issue when i install virtually. I'm trying to work out how to make the virtual one use my graphics card before i do that as a permanent solution

Have you tried another Win7 install disc? Another thing to try would be to use a usb thumb drive to install Windows 7.

Thanks for the quick responses guys,

    Kenco

I have tried 2 retail disks and 3 that i have burned all had the same issues which points to hardware issues.

When i tried to create a bootable USB i cant create the boot partition as my other other pc's are running 32 bit windows it claims to be incompatible using
    Code:
    BOOTSECT.EXE /NT60 /#drive letter#
I will test those guidelines you linked me to and see if just a simple drag and drop will work when i get home in roughly 4 hours though i doubt it will.

And yes ficky I have disabled floppy in the bios it had no effect no effect.

    "hi guys,

I have an asus p5n32 with the slow windows 7 64 bit install issue that I think I have fixed by enabling the memory map feature in bios. Its now installing 100 times faster as I write this.

I have 8Gb of ram in the machine.

    Hope it helps you."

"I had to create a profile on here just to thank you Cup1, that seemed to be the answer to my problems as well and im watching it now, your not exaggerating litterally a 100x faster as im watching win7 load. (Just for anyone elses reference im running a quad core, 4gbRam, Asus P5bSe, and on my bios it was under CPU>northbridge config> Remap Function>enable) Big thank you, Cup1"

Alternatively, remove some RAM before installing then put it back after. Windows install is a bit funny with greater than 4GB.

Thanks Ficky, at first glance it does appear to have sped it up initially. I'll keep an eye on it and update with progress.
