I recieved a Voucher code free from my brother for the upgrade version (when you buy a new PC with vista on it and get a free upgrade option) 2 things though 1. I assume it cannot be tied to his computer in anyway, it is being shipped to me by Microsoft (well at least it was there website i entered the code so assume it Microsoft) 2. How will the Upgrade option work? i know im going to recieve a DVD but will it be like a full OEM version or what Luck for you guys who have it
Ordered mine from Tesco Direct last month for £40. They've taken my money and the status says "In Warehouse, Dispatch Soon" but I'm not entirely sure I believe it!
The Home Premium which I have, is retail (not OEM) also it includes 2 discs, 1 32-bit and 1 64-bit. Not too sure how a upgrade voucher will play out, I would assume that its the same as an OEM.
Mine's with them too, and according to their site it's been 'dispatching soon' since I ordered it over a month ago, but they won't actually dispatch it until Wednesday for next day delivery (hopefully by courier).
What version is everyone getting?? Running RC at the mina nd will get this month, but haven't pre ordered
Home Premium. I've used virtual machines a LOT so didn't see the need to spend extra on XP mode i.e. Professional Edition.
Home Premium certainly seems to be the consensus choice. Glad to see people aren't being suckered in by the largely useless 'XP mode' (Before I get abused for saying XP mode is useless... I mean this purely from the point of view that if you know what you're doing you can download Microsoft Virtual PC 2007, or equivalent, completely free and lets face it, who here doesn't have an XP licence kicking about somewhere!)
Home Prem looks like the winner looked at loads of reviews and can't see why i'd need to spend 100 more.. that's a third towards an SSD cheers
I ran VMware on Linux for ages with an XP install. The guy on the phone even gave me a valid activation code.
Seemingly ... it doesn't really work very well in any case .... "useless" is not far from accurate as descriptions go. All versions of Windows 7 ship with both 32 and 64 bit disks - my understanding is you can not install both on separate machines or dual boot or you will get blocked by WGA. Version: 2 x Home Premium on it's way. Crazy B
I was thinking of getting Professional, you guys may just have changed my mind I'll be running the RC til I can afford it anyway, hopefully that'll be before March lol You can still get RC codes from Microsft btw, if you already have the download. Fortunately my hosemate does
This is the question I have for you, do you use or have you used the XP compatibility mode in Windows 7? And if not how have you come to the conclusion it's useless? If you have used it however the question still stands, how have you come to the conclusion it's useless? The fact is if you have the option of Windows XP Compatibility Mode, if it doesn't work in ithe environment you want it to work why install Virtual PC 2007 then install Windows XP onto a Virtual PC?, why not just install Windows XP on one partition then install Windows 7 onto another, best of both worlds then and it's a win win situation, as installing Windows XP on a Virtual PC will make it run worse and more sluggish than if you install a copy on a partition and just dual boot with Windows 7, I mean let's face it installing Windows XP onto a Virtual PC it will never run as well as it will installed as an actual operating system using all the dedicated hardware instead of the emulated hardware within a Virtual PC. Don't get me wrong Virtual PC's are a good thing for testing purposes but in my opinion not for using as an everyday viable option to run programs. But it's always better to have a 'useless' option and a few programs actually working in the compatibility mode than the option not being there at all.
I actually agree with you, as I have just discovered that I am unable to RDC between 2 Windows 7 Home Premium systems (needed access to Media Center). Think I should have read the print better, still not overly unhappy, at £44 at time of purchase, cheaper than most are getting now.
According to this page from Microsoft, their Remote Desktop Connection instructions: However, according to the Remote Desktop Connection FAQ's provided by them: I see a class action suit against Microsoft if they do not enable RDC on lower end versions as the main RDC page is explicit in stating it "applies to all versions" and this amounts to false advertising if you have to dig into the fine print to find it isn't true. Also it will only be a few weeks before someone finds a hack as was the case with versions of vista. If you need RDC to control media centre your out of luck currently with 7 HP but if you just want to share the media libraries it's built in however: Crazy B
