I'm in the process of installing Windows 7 onto my brothers newly built system. It's being installed via a USB key, as I'm out of blank DVD's. I've managed to set up the USB key correctly and it boots just as a DVD would. After selecting the language and clicking the install button, I'm presented with the following message:

I'm using the LG GH22NS50 SATA optical drive, but after researching through google the problem appears to be more to do with the motherboard's controller drivers. I found this page. I've tried installing both the Intel SATA drivers and the JMicron RAID drivers supplied with the motherboard (Asus P6T SE). They appear to install, then another message appears, stating:

I've tried installing all kinds of drivers, SATA ones, X58 chipset ones etc. I've tried them in all kinds of orders, but the above messgae keeps reappearing.

I've also tried installing Windows without the optical drive attached, no change. I've then updated the firmware on the new LG drive and tried my old NEC IDE drive, again no change.

Has anyone got any suggestions? Anyone come across these messages before? Or anyone managed to install Windows 7 on a system with an Asus P6T SE motherboard? This problem is driving me nuts and it's something I've never come across whilst installing Windows, weather 98, 2000, XP, Vista or Windows 7.

    Any help is much appreciated.

Try having Win7 on a DVD. We must rule out any "special things" like these, to ensure that we can diagnose the problem a little better. I have a feeling it has nothing to do with your optical drive or SATA controller, I think it's the USB stick or the method you use did to have WIn7 on the USB key.

I had a similar problem (no DVDs, used a flash drive), in the end I just made a small partition on my HDD for a copy of the W7 ISO image and mounted it to a virtual drive and it installed from there with no problems (very quickly too!).

There is a similar problem with the DVD installation. Try taking out the pen drive and re-inserting it, then click <refresh>.

Thanks for your quick responses guys. I've tried re-inserting the USB key to no avail. I'll buy some blank DVD's and try again tomorrow. As GoodBytes pointed out, I must rule the USB key out first.

I did follow this guide to get Win7 on the USB key, and it seemed to have worked up to this point.

I'll report back when I've tried the DVD, but it might not be till Saturday evening.

I have the same problem (but with a DVD), did you manage to get the right drivers?

Windows 7 is still an upgrade only installation over an existing copy of vista/xp. You can install vista then insert windows 7 installation usb or dvd and upgrade install.
A clean install retail version wont be available until October 22, 2009. After October you can use a retail windows 7 dvd/usb and clean install from bootup without needing an existing version of windows already installed.

I've a installation DVD from MSDN that is indended to use on new/test computers. I problem is that there is no drivers to make my SATA devices visible for the setup program.

I got mine installed fine in the end by using a DVD. However, I did try making a vLited version and the same problem cropped up. I might of removed something I shouldn't have though. I'd suggest trying to burn the DVD at a lower speed, this has ofen been the cause for problems on previous Windows installs.

Edit: I found that it had nothing to do with the drivers, or at least I couldn't find drivers that worked. It was all to do with the USB key itself with me, not sure why though!

It was the DVD that caused the message (missing drivers equals bad DVD!). Thanks for your help!
