Now I know that everyone has said a lot about windows 7
But that hasn’t done squat to stop my curiosity
Whats so good about windows 7?
I want to know everything that windows 7 does that Vista doesn’t
    Are there still widgets?
Whats new, some people say that its faster
Why is there so much of an up roar over windows 7?
You can get as techie as you want
    Links are greatly appreciated
    Or just any advise
And im looking to go 64-bit, nothing less btw
    wait for the pole :D
thanks for all of the help

If you have XP though, you're still using an OS that's on it's last leg. Why stay with soon-to-be antiquated technology? *shrug*

Either way, benchmarks have shown Windows 7 performs just as fast, if not faster, than XP, while also bringing all the latest security & features.

Uhm.... I could be making a fool of myself here... but why wouldn't 7 work on those specs? It seems to meet the minimum specs to me.

    Lol?

Of course it will, Windows 7 works on anything that can run XP and perform the same, even on lesser specs.

A guy even managed to make it run on a 266MHz Pentium II, 96MB RAM and a 4Mbs vid card, Google it if you want.

I have it running on a 1.5Ghz Celeron, 512mbs of ram, and 60Gbs HD on my dad's old laptop, and it works great.

Win7 is Vista done right, simply put. I compared a fresh install of Win7 Build 7600 (x64) against a fresh install of Vista x64 and Vista simply keeps more resources occupied under the same usage conditions. Idle RAM and CPU usage on Vista are about double of Win7 while the gap shrinks during gaming (but Win7 is still on top).

Gaming performance is about ~30fps better on Win7 for Source engine games and ~10fps better for COD4 and Dead Space. I didn't really check any other games.

Apps launch faster in 7, boot is quicker, if you're on a laptop then battery life is improved by a not-to-be-scoffed-at amount.

For an XP user, all this is not 'wowmygod awesome!' (let's face it, XP rocks) but for someone who's been using Vista, regardless of whether they love or hate it, Win7 is definitely worth the (frankly cheap) price.

Agreed, though if you're getting a new system and had a choice between XP, Vista, and Win7.. would you choose XP? Or would you choose an OS that performs just as well, has more features, is more secure, more versatile, and is up to date with current technologies?

Windows 7 as such isn't faster than XP. Actually, speedwise it's about on par with Vista SP2, which itself is getting close to XP.

What's better in Windows 7 speedwise is that it *responds* faster to user input, which gives you an overall feeling of improved speed.

I myself have skipped Vista and am going directly to Windows 7 64bit. It's really the only (Windows) upgrade path from XP in my opinion. :)

I've skipped vista and still have XP, but its definately starting to feel long in the tooth.

one more thing that has attracted me to w7 is colour management. a must for those with wide gamut monitors

It will happily run on those specs. If you'd have gotten the release candidate you would know that. But no, instead of trying it out you just assume that it sucks even though everyone else (who DID try it) says that it's awesome.

I'm moving from XP to 7. It's so nice and caring. It sorts out all my drivers for me and it even has all common codecs out of the box.

agreed i really enjoyed my time with the RC, but everyone is so quick to beat on "M$" since vista.

microsoft are no angels, what big corporation is? but they have provided us with some great products over the years and there is still plenty of talent in the company. i see BG leaving as a slight change in direction, with W7 being the fruits of it so to speak.

what's wrong with Vista in the first place, apart from it's ahead of its time and had wrong certificates given to crappy OEM PC's.

win7 is very good once you get used to the task bar. it's fantastic for netbooks due to WinKey+Number for clicking the task bar icons.

im tempted to make a 8 poll just for laugh
