Well thought I'd post this here seems as though I've been spending hours trying to get this damn thing to work (including re-downloading the 2 box files and the exe to unpack the box files from Digital River!) seems Microsoft have seriously f*cked up or something as there are literally thousands of people (probably millions) having the problem listed here http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7install/thread/aedb1245-f8f9-42ec-9a0c-1aa932363bbb Upon downloading from the Microsoft Student Website, I get 3 files. These are: Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x64.exe setup1.box setup2.box I double click on "Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x64.exe" and I get the message "Unloading the Box". Once the status bar reaches the end, I get the following error: "We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write files and that the folder is not read-only". So I wonder what Microsoft will be doing about this in the not too distant future!
What the hell has that got to do with this topic, P*ss off spamming tw*t, Can any Mod or someone with power of deletion please delete this noobs comment!, seems as though spammers seem attracted to this site lately, what's with the t*ssers! Thanks
I have the solution: 1 - Download Windows 7, it should give you 3 files. (Win7etc.exe setup1.box and setup2.box) 2 - Put the 3 files onto the desktop. 3 - Run the .exe file and a new folder should appear on the desktop called "expandedSetup". 4 - Download and unzip this and put it in C:\Windows\system32. 5 - Run command prompt as admin. 6 - Type in: Oscdimg.exe -u2 -b "C:\Users\<ACCOUNT NAME>\Desktop\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com" -h "C:\Users\<ACCOUNT NAME>\Desktop\expandedSetup" C:\WINDOWS7.ISO 7 - You should now have an ISO of Windows 7. Hope this helps.
I think you left out the download the oscdimg.exe, it is this that you put in system32. http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/10/23/how-to-create-and-make-bootable-windows-7-iso-from-exe-plus-setup1-box-and-setup2-box-files/ I may be pedantic, but I tried your method and was copying the expandedSetup folder to system32 - which didn't seem right.
+rep at Goodbytes. I did the same method to burn to a disc and install from that. (Thread here) Stupid DigitalRiver not allowing a straightforward ISO download >.>
MSNDAA is so much simpler. Download ISO, key is emailed to you, burn to disc, and your away. Oh, and its free,
In fairness to Microsoft and Digital River I downloaded it last night and it installed perfectly. Although mine was the EU version so maybe they've cocked something up in the US version
No really, the problem with MSDNAA license is you'll need to run everywhere in University to key a new key in the case you decide to reinstall (based on what MSDNAA says).
That's never been my case, I have managed to reinstall many times on the same key. Unless the rules have changed.
I downloaded the same version as you what with me being in the U.K and mine was the EU version, but I did manage to make an ISO out of the files because I got the Windows 7 Professional version via the student deal offer for £30 and after I had the same failure as thousands of other people including Horizon who posted earlier on in the topic here Win 7 Student Deal Anyway I followed the instructions to create an ISO out of the expanded setup folder it created and it must have extracted ALL the files even though it came up with that error as I installed it with no problems, it activated fine, and even though I ordered the 'Upgrade' version of Windows 7 Professional, I booted from the DVD I created installed Windows 7 with no prompts about it needing/wanting any media to verify the upgrade procedure and it kept my Windows XP installations intact so now I'm dual booting with Windows XP Professional and Windows 7 Professional with no problems. So even though it's supposed to be an upgrade, you can do a FULL clean install with no prompts to verify you had a previous OS installed, so it seems the 'Upgrade version' is actually a Full Retail version or it appears to be! Excellent
Ah great! I did not experience what I said, I just followed what it said in the EULA of MSDNAA license for Windows.
Alternatively, to the steps I provided, you have this tool from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6d-15f3-4284-9123-679830d629f2&displaylang=en
Goodbytes, While we all appreciate you typing the steps to create an ISO out of the downloaded files, to credit yourself with providing the steps is wrong, you copied the steps that someone else provided on a different forum. But thanks anyway.
It comes from 4 places, but ok. Bit-tech, and about all other forums, doesn't like links to other forums. If it's from 1 person, I'll quote, and say who, but I am not here to mention several forums, especially focused on a similar community, several posts where it's all separated in different step during which the steps were built. I regrouped everything based on people comments, and provided this here.
Okay, Thanks, it worked for me anyway and I now have an activated copy of Windows 7 Professional with no issues.
If you're running a 32 bit version of a previous system, you get this error. It apparently relates to trying to install the 64 bit over a 32 bit version. Just to compound it, if you're running XP 32, you can't boot from a USB drive either as DISKPART won't recognise it most of the time. I downloaded the student version and had exactly the same problems, managed to make an ISO with the steps above (which I found on a different forum) and install it, but major negative rep goes to Windows/Digital River for this one IMO.
