I understand that you need XP/Vista pre-installed, if I have an OEM XP from 5 years ago when I bought a Dell PC, could I install that in a fresh off the block PC with no software, then use the upgrade edition?

    I'm asking since on software4students it's £40 for Windows 7 Professional upgrade.

You can install the windows 7 without a license key and then install again over the top of it and the license key will work for activating

i dont think you need to do the double install trick, just install without license key, goto windows anytime upgrade and tell it you bought a license, type the license key in and voila

Here are 2 ways to perform a clean install with the upgrade disk:
    > You can start the setup in XP, and click on Custom install... and follow the process. This should tell your Win7 that you had a previous version of Windows, and everything will work fine. (I have never done this, but heard about it)

    > Boot from the Win7 upgrade disk (or bootable USB key if made so with Microsoft free tool), and follow Method #2 here:

This method I used it for 4 systems. Works like a charm.
