better web integration, the ability to store web based apps on the desktop and easily and quickly check their status. this would make using forums facebook and the like much easier as you could do it without ever opening your browser

Except for some game that don't use the Save Game folder to store... well save games. You have 2 folders that stores software settings (not 20 (exaggeration) like in XP).
You have Program Data (hidden), in C:\, which contain settings affecting all user accounts.
And you have AppData (hidden), in your profile, which contain settings affecting your account.

Just backup these 2 folders and you are set in transporting your software configurations from one computer to another or restore them after re-install.

Strange, as most people would want the opposite.

IE4 did actually tried to do this, and believe me, MS is not going to try it again. So many people complained, and see, IE7 is not anymore so much integrated.

Bloat.. please define, what is bloat?
I like Movie Maker, Superfetch, prefetch, auto-defrag, task schedule, Windows calendar, media center, and so on...
I have a better idea, and I think it's the ultimate system to have everyone happy.
My idea is to have a button called "custom install" in Windows setup, which allows you to install the components you want, like pretty much all software for Windows. One can only dream :)

you can with Server 2008 Goodbytes -- and hopefully they have said Windows 7 will use microKernal not macroKernal so you can pick what to put into it (unless they have changed that idea)

Ability to get rid of all the crap like WMP, movie maker etc., preferably the ability to install just the base system and customize it.

Well, ideally next Windows should be more linux-like (modular, stable, customizable, logical).

Somewhere I read that Windows 7 will get rid of the drive letters, spreading all data on all available disks, showing everything as just one, virtual space... and i HATE that idea.

me too, I heard that their will be a 32-bit version as well (probably for businesses that are stuck with old junk (crappy programed software/peripherals).
I don't think Microsoft will give the 64-bit on the retail package for the Home edition, as people (average user) would just get confused.
However, hopefully companies such as Dell and HP, will start putting 64-bit version with their 4Gb and more PC. And, have Microsoft sell the 64-bit edition is given by default, and you can order the 32-bit.

    I hope in the x64 versions, they merge the program files and the program files (x86) folders to one, but have them as subdirectories;
    c:\program files\64\winrar\winrar.exe
    c:\program files\86\mozilla\firefox.exe

that'd be pretty nice. I'd also like them to start fresh, and to include a virtual machine for running programs not designed from the ground up for windows 7. Kind of like mac os and 'classic'

Here is a simple hope and dream for the next great OS, don't release it till its ready.
Came across this article at tomshardware,
    http://www.tomshardware.com/news/microsoft-windows-vista-xp-sp1,6351.html
I had managed to forget the launch of vista until I read that article. I look at vista as a good OS now, its had some time to mature. I found it odd the other day when I was in a bestbuy and overheard some girls dad tell her that her new laptop has to have winxp and not vista.

Anyway, next OS, released when its ready.

I suppose what I'm looking for is an ultra-streamlined system.

It needs to have at least 48k memory which can easily be accomplished by having no GUI. To save disk space you could keep all your programs on tape and LOAD only the one you need from the command prompt. None of this silly multi-tasking, Alt-Tabbing nonsense.

But seriously, most things have already been covered. Focus stealing, update without restart and the ability deselect add-on software (movie-maker, outlook) as part of the install process.

Edit: Oh, and native detection and auto configuring for SSDs, since one's arriving here tomorrow. It's not a big thing disabling auto defrag, write caching and indexing, but it's not something everyone knows to do.

    Amen to that!

I would like to see a more modular approach and a new file system to give me the chance to install and update the OS without 3 reboots and a million "Yes" clicks. I heard "dont know if its true" that MS was working on a new file system for Vista but scrapt it because lack of time. I like OSx and Linux on that where everything is in one place and you just link them together.

It's used on linux most of the time, and now there's even a tool that you never have to restart the machine, even during a kernel upgrade!
